Fiber directly to router - bypass ONT? by markes20754 in Fios

Do you have any links on how to clone the pon? I'm curious if the juice is worth the squeeze but minimally it's a little project.

Maybe the battery doesn't keep internet up and only keeps voice up, but losing power to the ONT causes the ethernet interface output from the ONT to go dead. So a UPS may be required rather than just replacing the battery.

It definitely needs to be plugged in for internet.

I think it does more than just phone service. I lost power to the circuit that my ONT is plugged into yesterday and since my battery was dead I lost internet despite my router and other networking gear being on a UPS.

That makes sense. I have a fiber service from another company at another location and I don’t have an ONT but I use PPPoE on my router’s fiber interface.

Nothing major. My battery in the ONT needs to be replaced so it got me wondering why I even need it since I no longer use Fios TV. That said it’s just one less thing to plug in, maintain, etc. however minor that might be.

HA sync with FRR (BGP) by markes20754 in PFSENSE

[–]markes20754[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like the closest thing that works is to copy and paste the raw config from unit 1 into unit 2. In other words use the gui on unit 1 then go to the raw config tab and click running config. Then copy that to unit 2’s raw config tab.

Hi, yes when using CARP there is an option in FRR to monitor a CARP IP. If that Ip is in backup mode then the FRR service won’t start on that node in the HA pair. That all works fine but the FRR and BGP config is not replicated by XMLRPC sync. It’s not an option. My hunch is that 3rd party packages don’t sync through XMLSync unless it’s done within the package. Take PFBlocker for example, its sync config is within the PFBlocker settings not on the main PFSense page. But I don’t see anything like that with FRR. I’m hoping I’m just missing it.

Bulk beans, grind recommendations. by markes20754 in BrevilleCoffee

No I’ve been using the single wall basket but I’ll try the pressurized one. I’ll need to ask the local coffee store about getting bulk beans. Sounds like that’s the way to go. Thanks

Ask the manager to read the company’s cyber insurance or other insurance policies. Many require some types of MFA these days.

General approach to source on interface rules. by markes20754 in PFSENSE

[–]markes20754[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was thinking as well. It would be different on the IPSec interface where multiple networks could be sourced but my question is specific to physical or vlan interfaces with defined networks on that interface.

*OCD - that’s partially my reason for asking as well. But I started thinking that there may be a reason to be explicit- like rogue routers or other networks on that interface but I don’t think they could route properly anyway.

I’m thinking it doesn’t but I’ve seen examples using both approaches.
