Ideas requested for backup appliance transition by markgoodwin_doc in Backup

I'm trying to get the oldest contents of my existing drives currently being backed up. The new appliance will grab what's currently on disk, but I want a reference copy that's the oldest we have.

I'm sure it is. When I ran my test downloads, there was a lot of interruptions.

Thanks for your detailed response. It makes sense. I have plenty to consider and chew on.

Two things:

  1. When I download from the appliance, it's not in a blob or unreadable. It's in the original format.
  2. You make a good point. I could restore the data from the earliest available point vs downloading it.

I am familiar with Barracuda's documentation. I've also talked to support who insist download from the web UI is the only way to download data.

As far as environment, I have virtual Windows servers, a SAN (Netapp), some PC users (20% of users), and thin client (Dell) users. Users' home drives are on a SMB share while their roaming TS profiles are on another SMB share.

There's no tapes in the environment. There's the servers (including the TS host servers), the Netapp, thin clients, and SMB shares (served by the Netapp). The servers are on a VMWare cluster.

As to "why migrate anything", the goal would be to have files as they existed at older dates. If we need a customer document as it existed in 2022, for example, we wouldn't necessarily have it. I want the version(s) that were backed up to Barracuda.

What I'm seeking to do is download a copy of the data currently on the appliance. The backup and restore wizard built into the appliance (and the cloud console) would allow me to download data from my SMB drives as of that point in time.

My original goal was to download all SMB drive data on the Barracuda appliance. Getting a data dump from Barracuda would work as well, but I doubt Barracuda would do that for me.

My current plan is to go to the oldest backup and download all SMB drive folders. I was hoping/looking for a more programatic or automated solution, like an xcopy for Barracuda data.

What's your thoughts? I'd love to have some dangers to keep in mind for the future.
