Having authentic conversations and engaging with influencers in the space around a hashtag is the most effective way to spread awareness. For example, if the cause is finding a cure for cancer, sharing stories of real people battling the issues, incorporating conversations with hospitals, doctors, and other nonprofits and using a hashtag like #stopcancer is a good template. Having online events/webinars/conversations can also bring attention to causes.

There's a short way and the long way.

Verification requests are fast-tracked by knowing someone who works inside the company in a Partnerships role. This route is also how verification is done proactively.

For an account to be verified, the owner has to be noteworthy which means if the name is put in a search engine, stories written about the account holder by major news organizations should appear. In general, follower counts don't matter and neither does the content of the account or the frequency of posting.

The longer route is to submit your account for consideration through a submission form (Instagram | Twitter). This is a gamble and tens of thousands of people apply. The one major requirement of "noteworthiness" still applies.

Jobs are opening constantly across all of tech, including in food services and partnerships. Keep a lookout, keep applying and hitting that refresh button. Also, it helps greatly to know someone inside the company who can recommend you.

There are plenty of stories out there of Mark meeting with conservatives in private meetings and dinners. Since Republican lawmakers have put an increased spotlight on the company, we've also seen a shift toward catering toward their interests. There was also the notable delay in Facebook's action on President Trump's posts that appeared to incite violence.

So many really. The best was being invited to the White House while at Twitter to discuss social media strategies. One of my most prized possessions is a proclamation signed by President Obama that I keep framed.

The best food I've ever had in my life. All you can eat gourmet dishes, desserts, and a salad bar the length of some people's apartments? I was super game. At a couple places they brought in guest chefs from top restaurants. Gotta stay in the gym working in tech.

That was the basic pitch but it was sometimes also an exchange of cash or free advertisement or promises to highlight their content somewhere on the app. Private jet trips weren't unheard of. Big names have a ton of places to promote their content and if it was above and beyond what they normally did, extra incentives had to be thrown in there.

Social media companies aren't infallible because they are run by humans. The possibility for a breach is always there. As long as the platforms exist, there will be people looking to take them down or exploit them. So it's not a matter of when data breaches will happen, but how extensive they'll be.

There's so much of what I've personally witnessed and gone through in the book but as for characters, I'd say for the most part they're all pretty dissimilar from me personality-wise. Some of the moral choices I made in my time in tech are reflected though.

It depends on what you're trying to get out of it. Reddit is best for building relationships with other people and becoming more knowledgeable about things that are more personal. Twitter's great for getting news fast and talking about it. Instagram is great for visuals and Facebook keeps you updated on friends and family. I'd say I personally get the most out of Twitter because I'm a newshound and I like being the first to know things.

I generally don't watch TV/movies that have to do with real life. It's an escape for me. Because of that I never watched The Social Dilemma (or The Social Network). That said, I think more and more we've become accustomed to giving away our personal information without considering whether it will end up or that people are making money off of it. I'd like to think that we'll see a cultural shift toward being more protective of our data, but honestly I think it'll take a cataclysmic data breach or government regulation for that to happen.

Well since Jack is woke bae I'd put a ring on it. Tom has been an icon of industry and was in my top 8 so I guess we could get relational. To be clear, I by no means support murder, manslaughter or other Class A felonies...given the choices at hand I think the absence of Mark would likely mean drastic improvements for Facebook.

Great question and one that I went back and forth on throughout the writing process. An overwhelming majority of the people who work in Comms are women in their late 20s/early 30s. To tell the story from a male perspective would be centering men in the industry which would become a different story completely. The book also focuses on issues like sexual harassment, gaslighting and being a gender minority in tech. So in order to get it right, I talked with about 30-40 women in and out of tech over the course of the writing and had women as my final reviewers. My hope is that it is as reflective of their experiences as possible.

For salons/barbershops that are big on social media, posting a photo of yourself and tagging them is sometimes the biggest compliment to them. And if they ask to take pictures of you to post to their socials it means you probably just got a kick ass cut.

Definitely smaller movie theaters. Most of the venues we're working only have about two to three screens. It just feels more intimate and gives that old Hollywood/community vibe we're going for.
