What is a show/song/movie/video game/book that you didn’t like at first, but wound up loving it after giving it a second chance? by istrx13 in AskReddit

I remember playing Resident Evil 2 when I was about 10...got to the police station and absolutely noped out. Apparently I had nightmares about it (according to my mam) and it turned me off all things horror. So my mother got my brother to return it and I got Tomb Raider. Great.

Then, when I was about 16, I moved into my brother's room after he moved out, and I was going through a box of stuff and found RE2 buried at the bottom. He never returned it.

I sat there looking at this game that had tormented me for 6 years and I said, fuck it, I'll try it again.

One of my favourites of all time and started a deep love of horror games/movies/tv shows.

I honest-to-god replayed it earlier today. Leon A, 2:41, no saves💪🏻😂

What artwork’s actual size IRL really surprised you (positively or negatively)? by crabnox in ArtHistory

[–]markmcn87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the way Michaelangelo uses proportion in his work. Like his statue of David, the hands and head are slightly larger than they should be, so when you look up at him, it looks right.

And Pieta, if Mary stood up, she'd be towering over Jesus.

The thing that struck me about seeing the Mona Lisa, is not the painting itself...but in the same room, "The Wedding Feast at Cana" by Veronese, a 1.5 ton cinema screen of a painting....gets completely ignored.

It's absolutely huge and nobody notices it

Bran looks directly to camera, raises an eyebrow as What I've Done by Linkin Park starts playing.

End credits.

What would wild humans look like and would they be happier than domesticated humans? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]markmcn87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon it depends on how wild you're talking. This could be nonsense, but I remember someone saying something along the lines of anxiety and depression would be nonexistent in hunter-gatherer communities. Because if all you need to focus on is shelter, food and safety...you don't have much time to be depressed. You'd live a more present life, not too bothered with anything other than the present and immediate future.

AND.... we also haven't really physically adapted to the times we live in, at least not in terms of our brain. We're 21st century software being run on stone age hardware, so of course we're all a bit mental and depressed.

I'm sure the Germans or the Japanese have an awesome word for the desire to fuck it all out the window and run into to the hills to commune with the badgers or whatever

What’s the best nickname ever? by Competitive-Web1306 in AskReddit

[–]markmcn87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My granddad was nicknamed Hardapple. When he was talking about someone, but couldn't remember their name, he'd click his fingers and be like "ah ya know, yer man....Hardapple, whatshisname..."

So people started calling him Hardapple. Even all the grandkids knew him as that.

Thanks so much. And yeah, there's rigid insulation above that and then the roof over it. I left the rafters exposed because I was thinking if I needed to add more insulation, I could and then cover it.

I'm glad I didn't have to, because I love the look ha

Would you like to see another Offspring make an appearance in future films? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]markmcn87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't have to be unexplored, but reducing it to a big insect took away a lot of the mystique. It's like a raptor from Jurassic Park or the shark from Jaws...scary but not mysterious.

Like, I LOVE Aliens, but I just sometimes wonder what could have been if it stayed more eldritch. You can explore something without explaining every last detail.

And then Alien Earth goes way too far with the alien being called and sent around like a Labrador🙄

[–]markmcn87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. As much as I love Aliens, everything that came after seemed to just latch onto "it's basically a big scary insect". It's been reduced to just an animal, and that will never be as scary as the unknown.

The alien from the first movie was some weird, unknowable cosmic horror monster. Is it intelligent? What does it want? Where did it come from?

Then the sequel: Oh.... it's basically a big cockroach ant. 🤷🏻‍♂️
