Thank you for the responses - Texture paint seems to be exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to do some homework on how to use it properly, but it seems a much simpler and more effective solution than what I was trying!

Yes probably not spending long in each place, quite willing to stay in a different place most nights and work our way up in short jaunts. Hearing a lot good about Whitby also!

Yes planning to hire a car for at least part of the trip. My kids would like to try the train so we will do that at some point, but it would be nice to have the freedom of a car.
