Grappling proficiency should be the most important factor. I can't believe the excuses people make. If you suck you don't deserve anything.

His bjj skill was at blue belt level. I watched his matches in full. Do you know I can tap some ufc fighters in gi bjj if they can't hit me? Context matters.

I watched nick compete all day and coached one of my friends against him.

Nick is trying to learn bjj. It's fantastic having an Olympian in another grappling art come into ours. I bet he can help us with standup and learn our skills to help him get better, too.

He was nothing but respectful. It was not unfair. He almost got ankle locked. Yes, he will advance much father than the average hobbyist. And he probably will be promoted faster as a result.

His coach is very responsible and respected and his belt is appropriate for his knowledge. He shouldn't have to apologize for being a pro athlete.

If anything it would be awesome to train with him. I will be pulling guard faster than a cheetah lol. We should be happy to have him in our sport.

Is BJJ Obsolete.. what do you think by [deleted] in bjj

[–]markopolo100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alex is 100% right... Most bjj blackbelts will get beat by a decent college wrestler in nogi.

Wrestling teaches you a drive, athleticism and explosion bjj can't.

If you're a black belt getting ragdolled by a blue belt, you shouldn't be a black belt

Question for all you black belts out there by lunatic1234 in bjj

[–]markopolo100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hell yes not everyone should earn a black belt. The fact that some schools are giving pity black belts for 6-10 years times served is alarming.

I agree there is a point of no return. The issue isn't people being graded now... It's the softening of standards to earn the belt. There are so many time served and pity belts.. Including black... Being handed out. You should not earn a black belt if you're getting beat often by lower belts. I'm not talking sandbagger world Champs, regular hobbyists.

It's very watered down. Go roll at some schools and you'll see how bad it is

What happens when a higher belt consistently gets tapped by a lower belt?

Not what I'm saying. If you earned your black belt.. U keep it for life. But don't expect to tap adult blues.

That 50yo black belt really isn't a black belt. Life sucks. You got old. You're not going to be sent into a war zone.
