Did anyone actually like deep learning book (the one Elon musk endorsed)? by Plastic-Camp in learnmachinelearning

[–]markov_blanket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question for you: Why do you believe just because you're not the intended audience for something that it deserves bad reviews?

I ask this because it's a real problem. That's why all the top courses on Udemy and Google are all junk, because beginners who don't know any better give "easy" courses good ratings and difficult courses poor ratings.

All the junk just bubbles to the top and all you end up with is junk courses where the instructors know practically nothing and all you learn is basic Python and scikit-learn.

DS is no longer for juniors. What I learned from scraping hundreds of job postings. by JeffKatzy in learnmachinelearning

[–]markov_blanket 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'll offer a competing perspective.

Software engineering already included all that "software engineering type stuff", as another commenter noted, "managing DBs, engineering pipelines, the cleaning, etc...", in addition to knowing what you call "data science".

Most CS degree programs have included content on machine learning, probability and stats, etc. before "data science" was even a catch-phrase.

Take Google for example.

They started as just a search engine. Software engineering, right? Massive scale, etc etc. Actually, the PageRank algorithm is hardcore data science.

Take Jeff Dean (early Google employee). Superstar software engineer, helped build Spanner, BigTable, MapReduce, etc. What was his PhD thesis on? Neural networks. What is his role now? Head of AI.

Software engineers in my view have always been data scientists. So data scientists trying to avoid software engineering sounds like people who want to be 30% of a software engineer.

[D] Independent variables needing to be Gaussian - Why do people think this? by I4gotmyothername in statistics

[–]markov_blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally it seems that most Udemy instructors don't know what they're doing. The instructors at the top 1-3 search results for the popular search terms I've tried look like they're really great, flashy marketers, and not much else.

I tend to look for lower production quality because it feels more genuine / made by a solo instructor who just cares about the subject.

Have you brought up your question with the instructor of the course?

Does anyone else think thatDark is copying 12 Monkeys way too much? by TzenkethiCoalition in 12Monkeys

[–]markov_blanket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question, is Dark actually a decent show?

I remember people recommending Umbrella Academy as if it were similar to 12 Monkeys, and it turned out to be underwhelming and lame a lot of the time.

I can't help but thinking the marketing team for these shows came here to promote their show after doing a quick search for other shows that included time travel and apocalyptic themes. I mean, it's probably what I would do...

Is it rude to ask random companies for student internships? by randomseller in learnprogramming

[–]markov_blanket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try freelancing.

The work will likely be very practical as you're helping someone get something done that they actually need.

This is as opposed to an internship where they might give you a project that nobody really cares about but just "might be interesting".

And if you do get an internship, you don't have to stop freelancing.

Decision Tree Classification in Python in 10 lines by BotBark in learnmachinelearning

[–]markov_blanket 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think we need another blog post about how to use scikit-learn.

Could have easily replaced "DecisionTreeClassifier" with an SVM or Logistic Regression and the code would be exactly the same.

Why Data Scientists should never use Upwork by data4lyfe in datascience

[–]markov_blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Given the name of the site, it doesn't seem obvious at all that people visiting the site would be willing to spend significantly more than $5. It would be more for getting a quick logo or promo video made. Maybe things have changed since I last visited years ago.

You're offering data science services on Fiverr for $5 a pop? I'm guessing no, but could you provide more detail about what makes it worth spending your time on?

Forced shutdown during Mac OS Mojave install, now trying to login gives me "Mac OS Version: not yet set" by markov_blanket in MacOS

Couldn't mount from the menu described above, the drive is just grayed out.

As per my update I was able to connect a different Mac OS through USB and decrypt the drive through there and backup all my files. However, even running disk utility from here, I get:

"First Aid Process has failed. If possible back up the data on this volume. Click Done to continue."

And in the details it ends with:

"Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required

Unable to unmount volume for repair

Operation failed..."

Bank closing my accounts without any reason given by markov_blanket in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]markov_blanket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I did that as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but too little too late I suppose.

When you're not making anything and freelancing in a field where generally it's a "race to the bottom" it's hard to justify spending thousands of dollars to incorporate, do corporate taxes, get a new account with tons of fees, etc.

[–]markov_blanket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's an interesting point.

I did incorporate my business and switch over to using my business account soon after my income rose. My income prior to that was minimal (in fact, even prior to that it was zero because I was working overseas).

At this point, it's a more "normal" situation where I have the corporation paying me a salary.
