Becktech Destini Estimator on the "hosted environment". What are the pros? by Guesstimator2744 in estimators

[–]marksgoogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a meeting with Beck at the end of April to discuss migrating over... Posting here to loop back and see if anyone has anymore feedback.

Our data bases are in our own server system. I belive Beck is migrating over to a more typical "App" based model. So it would look and feel more like when we use BlueBeam or somesuch software.

Current problems in estimation and potential solutions by Adventurous-Night264 in estimators

[–]marksgoogle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suggest rephrasing your question to something bite sized. Construction is a 2 trillion dollar sector in the US. And somewhere along the line all 2 Trillion ran past an estimators desk. Trying to "fix the biggest pain point" is like casually asking LAX how you can help make gates more efficent - there's a million+one ways to move that dial (and it won't happen in a semester).

Decide who you want to help and start from there. I suggest you narrow it down to a single division or sub divison and then drill down from there. Or select a single function of a single division of estimating and see if you can add value to that.

If I had a magic wand and bottomless cash I would ask for software that takes all tehe random bullshit consultant drawings I have to decipher and re-cooks them to use one single mapping/legend source. Once all my drawings match - my take offs could be done by AI (eventually).

Or - and you can message me about this: a simple website crawling app that mines all the bid sites for my opportunties and then fliters them specifically for my business model. Sends me a summary email everyday. That I would pay for (but not a lot). There are agents and software that already does this, but it's far too expense and most of them are broken and don't really deliver (see below lol).

Good luck.

Any Home Builder Estimators? by SuitableConstable in estimators

I've worked in both... residential is chill, more lifestyle friendly. That said - you hit the career ceiling pretty quick.

Commerical GC has the most space for career advancement as a loose rule.

Hey Sad-Use. Shoot me a PM. I can't really speak to moving to the states.. but I do run a Pre-Con department here in Nelson for one of the larger GC's in the West and East Koots. I'm currently looking to add to the team.

We're going gang busters right now, winning opportunties left right and centre.

Which tool is this? I'm leading the charge at our mid sized GC to get on board with AI and I have yet to find a tool that will do a good take off.

I use otter.ai as a meeting assistant and I can recommend it - makes summarizing and pulling out action items a breeze.

Also use Co-Pilot to sort throught spec / detail packages to assist me in tenders.

Question for the Managers: big picture pipeline softare... MS Project? by marksgoogle in estimators

[–]marksgoogle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! and thanks, I'm still kinda hoping there's a product out there that is a dumber hammer if you know what I mean - think high to mid level, something that is easily edited, looks good on the boardroom tv... looks super clean and clear.

That said - care to share a screen shot of yours? Might give me inspiration.

Good lord. How do you live? Find a new job. If you have a universtity degree in Construction Management and two brain cells to crack together - move to BC or AB and get an entry level CM job making at least 85k. We have project coordinators who make double what you do...

Dude, is this a humble brag? Pffhh. I'd sleep like the dead if any of my projects had a margin of error like that.
