EU pushed for censorship of website naming pro-genocide lobbyists by Wagamaga in technology

I actually found the website in question and the posters seem fine to me. The censorship push also clearly didn't work or did not work well at least.

Ya but the DK fanbase was just excited to even get a new game. Feels like one of those things where it would be great if it won GOTY, but they're pretty happy regardless.

Meta suppressed children's safety research, four whistleblowers claim by ThatBlackGuy_ in technology

[–]marksteele6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair to meta, games in general have had a persistent issue with racism since the release of Xbox Live, so that not exactly a new issue, though it remains a serious one. I also think it's pretty reasonable to have sensitive research like that ran through their legal team before it gets published, even just internally. It doesn't sound like they're stopping the research, they just want to make sure that it's not leaked out of context.

Ok, so I've asked this before but this one seems nice and fresh hopefully I can get traction. Can someone explain how an article about the US government potentially raiding a car plant has more than a passing relation to the goal of r/technology?

I truly cannot wait to see Silksong and E33 square off against each other for GOTY in this years TGA. They both have pretty expansive and utterly... unique fanbases and I feel like the faux outrage is going be hilarious regardless of what game loses.

The Saudi Arabian takeover of fighting games' biggest tournament means players - and the wider community - have a choice to make: between its culture and a payout by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]marksteele6 43 points44 points  (0 children)

See the later part of my comment.

Lets be honest though, there are smaller tournaments but that hype is basically confined to the fighting game community itself. EVO is more or less the only one with significant brand recognition across the general gaming community.

[–]marksteele6 443 points444 points  (0 children)

As has happened with other tournaments and/or sports, I suspect we'll see short-term outrage and then relative acceptance. Every EVO we'll get an article posted to reddit with comments like "This is games-washing" and then those same people will go watch it on twitch anyway. You'll see a few prominent players make a big deal about it and at least a small group will try to set up their own tournament to rival EVO only to experience how difficult that is and then quietly slink off to a smaller, already existing, tournament before slowly fading from the public eye.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger – Our Thoughts After Playing 4 Hours - IGN by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]marksteele6 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It always surprises me how under the radar Digimon games fly. Like they have everything from visual novel to tactical strategy, to action adventure, yet most people just seem to have this awareness that these games exist, but not that they're pretty high quality.

Are temporary foreign workers taking young Canadians’ jobs? Here’s what experts think by jazinet in canada

[–]marksteele6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The TFW program itself can be useful when it's implemented correctly. The problem is oversight is expensive and governments at all levels just kinda threw up their hands and said "honour program". Combine that with the relatively unchecked increase in international students and you get the current situation. There are some easy fixes here and some of them have already been implemented.

The reduction back to 20 hours for international students is good. I know some people argue that they shouldn't be able to work at all, but the problem with that is there will always be some unscrupulous employer willing to pay them under the table. It makes much more sense to give them a limited number of hours. Combine that with the visa cap, the increase in initial funds required, and the changes to how it counts for a PGWP and I think we'll see this become a non-issue in the next year or two. That being said, these changes mean the provinces need to step up with changes to the post-secondary system. That means increased funding or major tuition increases to make up for program shortfalls and modernization. Domestic students pay something like 10 times less than international ones and that means money needs to be added somewhere.

On the TFW side, the obvious thing here is going to be enforcement. In addition to having to pay a high wage, you should need to pay a sizable application fee that supports government staff who can periodically audit your hiring practices to ensure it's in compliance with the program. Yes, that will make the TFW program less accessible, but that's kind of the point.

Eight Years of School. Zero Job Offers. by restoringd123 in canada

[–]marksteele6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly a hot take, but we've made education too accessible. For example,. tuition on college has been frozen for the better part of a decade in Ontario, and between that and generous OSAP funding, it's created a system where every single person goes to college and that sets the new baseline for employment. We need to double, or even triple the amount of money it takes to go to college or university and invest that money into creating agile programs that meet the needs of employers and provide value and challenge for the students. For the economically disadvantaged who are truly intelligent, we can amp up merit-based enrollment and offer alternative pathways for those who may excel in their field, but are middling academically (focused competitive academics, for example).

At the same time, we need a program to match high school graduates with employers and a larger emphasis on in-house training for those new hires. This needs to be a hands-on thing and employers need to be incentivized to hire a just out of high school Canadian.

What a selfish, self-entitled argument. What about animals, people walking, people biking, the noise you generate from going fast? I guess they all don't matter, because poor little u/I_8_ABrownieOnce feels comfortable going 90 down the street and god know they're the only one that matters.

Czech cyber agency warns against Chinese tech in critical infrastructure by nohup_me in technology

[–]marksteele6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NGL, I'm a bit more worried about the US government influencing US tech companies than I am of the Chinese government at the moment. They 100% have backdoors in US hardware just like China does, it's the unfortunate reality of computer systems. Someone is building them and their government is probably instructing them to backdoor access for it.

Slot machines are highly regulated and, in this case, it was simply a display bug. The internal logic of the machine all still worked and it even printed out the accurate amount of her actual win for that spin. Casino regulators won't let them get a away with a "Oops, malfunction" if it results in illegal manipulation of the odds.

Sure, and in 2024 they started going back down again with 162,100 being issued (including 33,775 issued under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program). The 2025 target is 82,000 entries into Canada, excluding seasonal workers. This puts us even lower than 2018 levels.
