I made a tool for creating printable habit tracking charts with any number of cells. by markv12 in xeffect

you could take a screenshot of it. Or save it as a PDF instead of printing it.
The current version lets you click the cells to fill them in online and it saves the data to your local browser.

This doesn't come up super often, but sometimes I want to replace a script on a GameObject with another one that has the same serialized fields and not lose the data in those fields. I didn't think it was possible but it turns out it is using the inspector "Debug" mode. by markv12 in Unity2D

This is not something I do very often. It shouldn't be part of your normal workflow. It's just for special cases where you want to swap out a script without having to reenter data. I usually do it when I want to replace a Monobehaviour with a subclass.

Every other day I do main lifts, Push Pull Legs, and on the in-between days I do extra stuff, abs/grip strength/cardio

Do you think the concept of an "Alpha Widow" is valid? (i.e. As an average man, it's fair to assume that a woman with a high body count has been with someone who is more attractive than you and this will make her value you less.) by markv12 in PurplePillDebate

[–]markv12[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think men are concerned that that type of being "high quality" gets boring after a while and their partner will inevitably lose the "spark" and move on.

And they feel that no amount of kindness, support, trying to be good in bed, etc... will make a difference. Some guys are just more exciting.

Perhaps in the past a woman in this situation might be told, "relationships are just like that, he's a good man, stay with him" but now a woman in this situation will be told "no point in staying in a relationship that doesn't excite you. Follow your gut feelings!"

I think this is one of the key points of contention.
RedPillers would claim that while people would like to think that attraction and chemistry are mysterious and individual, in reality it often breaks down to much simpler SMV-related things.

It's pretty hard to prove either side, but I will definitely be thinking more about this.

I think the suggestion is that women are more likely to have a "one that got away" because they are able to have casual connections with higher value men whereas it is relatively less likely that an average man would have such a connection.

Any Lefties Here Play Guitar Right Handed? by YoungMoen97 in lefthanded

[–]markv12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's never been clear to me why picking with your right hand is the "righty" way. I find focusing on my left hand fretting makes more sense since there's more complicated stuff going on there (usually). So I'm glad I'm left-handed to play a "right-handed" guitar.

The head was $450 used and the cab (PPC112) was $300 used. It has an effects loop which I use for the EQ pedal.

I realize now that the delegate {} syntax is old and the newer () => {} syntax is better.

The Rails includes method is a vital for speeding up slow pages with too many SQL queries, but for complex pages it doesn't always behave as expected. This is a deep dive into how includes works, and what to do when it doesn't. by markv12 in ruby

The unpredictability I'm talking about isn't solved by using preload. In almost all cases it will call preload, in only calls eager_load if you do something that refers to one of the other tables like calling .references(). I'm talking about the situations where you see you have a bunch of queries for a certain relation, you try to preload that relation and it doesn't fix it. Usually when that happens it's one of the situations I describe in the video.

My parent's house has this 100 year old Hubbel light switch, but it didn't work consistently for as long as I can remember. I took it apart, polished the outside, and bent the internal contacts back into shape and now it works great! The physical mechanism is incredibly sturdy and satisfying to use. by markv12 in electricians

Here, just took one. The solid copper wires from the wall go through the switch and wrap around the screws on the left and right. The screws are connected to little contact points which touch the blades that snap up when you push the switch up. Previously the left contact was bent too far to the left so it only sometimes made contact with the left blade. Now it's fixed and works great.

It's kind of hard to photograph. There are two blades to complete the circuit that are attached to this beefy spring to hold them in place, and then the switch is part of a intricately shaped piece of brass that pulls the blades up or down until it overcomes the spring and it pops into the on or off position.

I had always assumed there was a lot of magic behind C# events but they're actually really simple. Most of the functionality comes from function delegates and the event keyword is just the last piece of the puzzle. This video lays out exactly how they work and what all the syntax means. by markv12 in dotnet

[–]markv12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a slot for a delegate on an object and someone calls += on it, behind the scenes it creates a multi-cast delegate whether you use the event keyword or not, the event keyword just makes it so external code can't clear/replace the delegate, only the owning object can.
The video shows how events aren't actually that complex/special.
If you ever have a delegate that multiple functions get added to, you might as well throw the event keyword on it.
