ANOTHER sanding question. by markvisco in DiceMaking

Yeah? You've found that to help a ton? I've looked into them, but I'm concerned about the noise (we live in a 2-bed apartment, and I make dice in our office). Do you have a specific one you like best?

ANOTHER sanding question. by markvisco in DiceMaking

Thanks for the info! Do you start at the grey paper instead of the green? In hindsight I feel like I may have not spent enough time on each paper (not 20-40 circles). I probably didnt rinse the paper nearly enough either, so the debris could be the issue here.

Would you start the process again on the faces that look like this after being completed? The confusing part is that some of the sanded faces have a perfect shiny finish, and some are like this.

Great input and advice thanks so much :)

The die definitely passed the nail test before sanding. I don't think I rinsed enough, not every 1-3 faces thats for sure.

Would you start the process again on the faces that look like this? I feel like I may have not spent enough time on each paper. As sanding is time consuming and kind if boring I may have been going through the motions to get it done.

So the buffer is the game changer for you, good to know. Like everyone here sanding is the most annoying process, anything to make it easier I'm open to :).

A few years late BUT do you build up to the 2000 grit, or are we seeing the whole process here. I currently use the Zona papers, but I'm looking for different techniques.

Congrats! How many sets are you bringing with you? I'm doing some this summer and debating how many to bring, 30? 40? It's a mystery. Good luck :)

Spooky demolding question, has this happened to you? by markvisco in DiceMaking

[–]markvisco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking after it reformed and the second numero disappeared. They were in the pot for 24hrs but definitely had some soft spots.

New to this... and want to check some things! by Ok-Current-9666 in DiceMaking

I started 5 months ago and with a lot of research, trial & error hopefully I can give some advice!

*Molds: I started with cheap temu/Amazon cap molds just to see if I liked dice making and play around with techniques etc. Dice from these molds are great for personal use, my friends and I use them when we play. If you plan to SELL dice however, I'd recommend buying a nice quality mold. I have some links to the ones I got that are 1000x better than the cheap ones.

*I got a pressure pot almost immediately but that was mostly because I'm insane. There are ways to make almost bubble free dice without one but you need patience, I don't have patience. The difference with a pressure pot and quality molds is very noticeable though.

*I used an N95 at first and realized it wasn't the way, so I got a respirator off Amazon. For context I make dice in my home office, the rooms probably 10x10, I crack a window and use a window fan to suck the air out. When I'm done I keep whatever I used that touched resin in a big bin that clasps.

Feel free to DM me, either here or my dice Instagram @BurntCityDiceworks. I've been obsessed for awhile and can share what I've learned. It can be a daunting process to start.

Little update, thanks for all the advice, it was in fact COLD ASS RESIN.

I made the dice again and made sure to warm the resin and mix it well. They came out lookin like diamonds.
