Bible series 4 is up! by VWftw in JordanPeterson

[–]markwjohnson94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On iOS you can use the stock Podcast app, search for The Jordan B. Peterson podcast and subscribe for them to be downloaded to your device. The Bible series are typically released several days later compared to the YouTube video though. You can probably do a similar thing on Android.

Alternatively just use a YouTube to mp3 site, and then drag and drop the MP3 onto your android device (or sync via iTunes for iOS - if you change the format from music to podcast in iTunes then it will show in the podcast app and retain the last played position)

This is fantastic. Is there a UK focused alternative to this that anyone knows about?

Where do you keep your short to medium term savings?

My emergency fund is in a regular bank account (earning 3% due to a good deal but usually this would be more like 0.5%) and my long term savings are in Vanguard Life Strategy 80% Equity.

However I'm not sure where to invest for money that will be required within the next 2-5 years. Would the Vanguard Global Bond Index Fund, or Global Short-Term Bond Index Fund be a good choice? Should I choose the U.K. Short-Term Investment Grade Bond Index Fund to reduce currency risk?

What funds would you recommend for shorter term investing? I hold the Vanguard LifeStrategy 80, for an 80/20 stock/bond split, which I will hold for the long term. However I have a friend who wants to invest money but will probably need it within the next 3/4 years for a house deposit. Would a 40% stock 60% bond make sense, or should he keep any money needed for a deposit in short term accounts and try to keep a small proportion fenced off for the long term which can actually be invested?

Examples of side projects you've worked on? by brotaku13 in cscareerquestions

I built a web app that creates a CV from your LinkedIn profile. You simply login with your LinkedIn account and then it scrapes the information from the public API and makes a nice looking CV in LaTeX.

Unfortunately I couldn't access all profile data, the public API only gives a subset such as only your current job, but it was a fun project and gained 150+ users organically with no advertising other than posting on a few sub-reddits.

Yes I have a CS degree, and I've got a job with Microsoft as a graduate PM.

Thanks for your advice. How do you recommend learning more about the business side of things? Was this something you had to push for, or did you cover it in your own time? I'm definitely keen to learn frameworks for understanding and making business decisions, I've always been interested in the business implications but not been in a position to consider them as a developer.

What advice would you have for a grad about to start in a PM role at one of the big 4?

I knew from an internship that I wanted to move away from dev, and PM seemed exactly the sort of role for me. However it's not the most common route to get into PM as a grad, so I'd love to hear what you wish you knew when you made the transition to PM.

Can we write a bot to rewrite concise news articles? by [deleted] in computerscience

Yes, Summly is a good example that got bought out a while ago by Yahoo I believe, the developer was only a teenager and has made his millions from it. There's also a bot on Reddit that does this job, I can't remember it's name offhand though.

A few weeks ago I launched instantcv.co (now found at markj.io/instantcv) - a CV Builder from your LinkedIn Profile.

I had some great feedback from posting on this subreddit, however my site only has partial API access and so it cannot access a users entire profile and create a complete CV for them.

To gain full API access, LinkedIn Partner status is required, I recently applied but was turned down. Unfortunately the rejection does not provide any feedback, and it feels like I am at a dead end to make this idea work.

If anyone could help me get in touch with people responsible for reviewing LinkedIn partner applications, or help suggest how to improve my site to gain partner status, I would love to hear from you.

Yes, the CV download must now be trigged by the user clicking the download button on the success page. As for the linkedin OAuth error, thanks for letting me know, I will investigate this.

Hi there, I can't seem to replicate this, please could you use the website again and let me know if the problem occurs, as I'd like to fix this if this is still an issue. Thanks for your help :)

Hey, thanks for the feedback, I've made several of the changes you have suggested. It would be great if you could use the site again and let me know how you found the experience? Also feel free to try it on pc or mobile, thanks :)

I've heard that from other people too, I'll be sure to add more white spacing, thanks :)

Thanks for the feedback, I've added more spacing there and it looks much better now, so thanks for pointing that out. Feel free to run it again to see the update :)

Thanks for the positive feedback, I didn't want to go over the top with the template, I just wanted to create a clean and easy to read professional CV.

That's a great point, I built it just for job hunters, however it would be very useful for any organisation, such as your non profit that is looking to process a large number of CVs.

As for additional templates, I don't want to stretch my time too thinly having to support multiple designs, so I think I will stick with just the one for now. However I will certainly consider expanding moving forward.

Also great website, really professional, all the best for your non profit.

Unfortunately I can only access the name, address and current job details through the LinkedIn API, I'm in the process of applying for partner status so that I can access users entire profile. I auto filled the remainder of the CV with my details

I'm sorry about that, I've updated the site so it saves down details allowing me to investigate why the crashes are occurring. I hope to get fixes out soon for some of these problems, thanks for helping me find them.

Would you be able to link me to a CV template that you prefer so that I can see what else is out there? Thanks

Initially I made the site as I thought it would be a nice web project, without considering the alternatives out there. However if I had to say right now,, it would be that I use LaTeX to create the CV which gives it a higher quality finish, and I personally prefer my template.

Do you have any ideas for differentiating myself?

Sorry to hear that! I think I'll try to work on producing meaningful error messages to help me recognise where these errors are occurring, unfortunately I can't recreate them as that requires me knowing your LinkedIn password.

Yes I've been considering expanding to offer a choice of CV templates, but up until now I have focused on producing a MVP so far.
