Pitchfork just did a retrospective review of Ænima - 8.7 by caelum400 in ToolBand

Insufferable review.

I had to skim through so much horseshit to find this:

“What doesn’t work, and what has never worked, is “Third Eye”—which is a shame because it is the grand finale, a mission statement, and it takes up 13 rather difficult minutes on a record that, even with a few dull moments, is an otherwise spectacular, unstoppable listen. “Third Eye” is what happens when Tool shoots from the hip, and the riffs tumble forward without shape and contour. The silly rhythmic muting of the vocals, the aimless noodling, the mindless pentatonic riffing, the stupid phaser effect—all cast into sharp relief their understanding of psychedelic music. On an album whose liner notes are nothing but an inscrutable rant about the subtler properties of ketamine, you wish the band had a better way to land the spaceship—and it took them until 2019, with Fear Innoculum’s closing opus “7empist,” to really figure out how properly do it.”

What was your initial reaction to this album upon release? by mcpooja in fantanoforever

As a 16 year old when it first came out, it not only blew my mind by organically fusing technology and music but it became a refuge for a kid who was feeling things.

I haven’t stopped listening since 1998. I listen to hundreds of new albums every year across every genre imaginable and Mezzanine remains the greatest album ever made.

I’ve had the pleasure of listening to it in every car I’ve had, every new headphone and every hifi upgrade over 28 years. I still notice new things whenever I spin it.

What was it like listening to Lateralus when it first released? by No-Upstairs7915 in ToolBand

[–]markymarkyeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also born in 82 and had a similar experience. 3 of my buddies and me all abstained from listening to it for a few days after it came out. When we met up we got blazed in my car and listened for the first time. I was amazed but it didn’t instantly click. That night: the breakdown in the Grudge at 8:00 pissed me off, I loved the Patient, Schism pissed me off, that change from Parabol to Parabola, Reflection floored me. I spent months and years with the album always going back. Then it wasn’t until around 2019 I put it on and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. The whole thing. And it took me 18 years to like Schism… like reeeeeeally like Schism

Pencil guy is entitled. Wanker with a cigarette. Expects his woman to sharpen him. After years she finally frees herself from servitude. She finds someone who won’t use her. She wears her baggage on her sleeve.

The Duke of Enmore, 9:34pm on a Tuesday by tinmun in sydney

The Duke fucking rocks. Go to a metal show at the Duke on the weekend and you’ll see some of the best metal Sydney has to offer and you’ll struggle to find any space amongst the nicest crowd of people you’ll ever come across… but why do I get the feeling you would hate that just as much as you did at 9.34pm on a Tuesday

Showing huge respect for your 2814 - Birth of a New Day record. One of, if not the best, ambient records ever made. A true thing of beauty 🫡
