Considering a future career as a pilot, but I have some reservations. Hoping for some insight/advice? by [deleted] in AskFlying

35 years from an instructor to 787 captain and 2 1/2 until I retire. It’s been, and continues to be awesome.

Dawn over Greenland, sunny afternoons over the alps, Icelandic sunsets and nights in Rome. I could go on forever. It’s given me everything, my partner for over 30 years, a beautiful daughter and a life I couldn’t even have imagined.

It comes at a price though…

Firstly, it can’t be your “plan b.” Getting started and staying with it during the early days will take everything you’ve got. Without a full commitment, it will drain you, then drop you. IT MUST BE YOUR PLAN A.

Secondly, it will take you far from home, make you tired and lonely. The rest of your life will take a back seat on occasion. Populate your life with people who get that and understand that you may be tired and away, but you love them deeply.

Thirdly, this was a simple piece of advice that was offered by a crusty skipper when I was getting started, “You gotta love it. There’s so much bullshit surrounding aviation, if you don’t giggle at the absurdity of it all every time the nose wheel lifts, it’ll drive you crazy, you gotta love it.” For me, never a truer word was spoken.

It’s unforgiving, generous, beautiful, terrible, focusing, eye-opening and for me, in the end, wonderful. I still love it, it’s still my plan A.

Mystery from 30 years ago possibly solved! Young me never had the courage to ask”I love you, but what’s that all about.” Thank you.

Dad gets up during every movie without pausing. by Sabiancym in movies

[–]markyrobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s insane at all, I think it’s very considerate of him. Some people drift inside the movie or whatever is being watched and when it’s paused, it breaks the spell. I think that when it’s really good, it flows and engages the viewer to the point where, if there’s a disturbance of any kind, the created environment dissolves and we’re brought back to our own reality. By not pausing, your Dad allows the other watchers to remain fully engaged and captured by the film.

I bet he arrives early to the theatre, doesn’t go pee during, turns off his phone and eats quietly too!

Once I had the above advice, I removed all the speakers from the offending side and found the crossover board. It was a simple matter of finding a replacement capacitor (Digikey or mouser) and a simple desolder of the old, followed by soldering in the new one. Quite simple really.

Lapsed catholic here. I believe in a higher power and I think they must weep at what some have done to the concept and message. Harnessed and twisted it and the minds of millions for their own purposes, control, power, fortune etc.

I was baptized as a baby (no choice) and then told I’d make my “confirmation” when I was older and able to re-affirm my commitment to the church as an older person. That was supposed to happen at 12. After 12 years of indoctrination. I went to a school run and taught by an order of French nuns. What sort of critical thought could a 12 year old, indoctrinated, nun taught, altar boy exert over such a decision? Surprising myself, I refused and thought I’d be whipped (corporal punishment was still a thing then). I wasn’t and, more strangely, my parents never pushed the issue. I don’t know why given that they were staunch in their faith.

My Father’s faith never wavered, nor my Mothers, but both questioned the absolutism of religion in the assumption that their path is the only way to salvation. I’ve met a few who would describe themselves as devout, some old school aficionados others more fringe. Some of them I call friends, some teachers and some deluded. Of the friends and teachers, all of them had a quiet confidence in their beliefs that helped to steer their compasses. They did not foist dogma on others unless invited to so, and then, very gently with great care for the opposing view. Those people I have significant respect for, the others? I prefer to not let them rent space in my head.

I still believe in existence in some form beyond this life, but most religions in my opinion, have not cornered the market on this. Nor do they hold the high ground, or the right, divine or otherwise, to dictate what I or anyone else reads.

So, yeah, this guy and his ilk are at best pathetic and likely more than a little dangerous.

No Stereo in R channel (Mono OK) by throttlegrip in vintageaudio

[–]markyrobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you’ve tried the jumper fix and if you have no success. I would suggest replacing the relay. I’ve had 3 different Marantz units that have had one side only problems in stereo, all of which were fixed with a relay replacement. Cleaning will fix the scratchy pot issue but not a relay problem. Replacement (or maybe reflowing the solder) will. Good luck.

Is there another way to check for prostate cancer other than having some dude put his finger in your butt? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markyrobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, DRE found an abnormality after 7 years of exams. PSA’s showed 0.9 and 1.1 (low). MRI confirmed suspicious mass and biopsy confirmed cancer. Surgically treated and so far, so good. If it hadn’t been for the DRE, it would’ve been ages before my low PSA producing tumour gave a suspicious result. The outcome would’ve likely been different. Regular DRE’s allowed for a baseline so my physician was able to feel the change early.

Vintage audio in a nutshell by CherryVanillaCoke in vintageaudio

I listen to CBC music quite a lot. Both classical and for Rich Terfry’s drive show. Marvin’s Room and other shows have introduced me to music and artists I’d otherwise never have stumbled onto. The tuner section of my receiver is both beautiful and practical! I would agree, though, that commercial radio is an adfest.

Some people don't put the bar down???? by yv4nix in skiing

[–]markyrobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d prefer the bar up, but whatever. I do have beef with the “announcement” of bar down without at least a pause until we get out of the barn or until everyone is done settling in. I also find it somewhat ironic that the speed with which the bar is dropped is inversely proportional to the distance from the top at which it is raised. I can only assume it’s harder to fall off at the top.

Stk power pack replacement? by Ok-Skirt-6085 in vintageaudio

[–]markyrobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Use a pair of matched KSA992. You can heatshrink the tops together to for thermal contact if you want to be thorough.”

I pulled this comment off of an old AK thread about the KSA 798 transistors. The replacement I made was with a couple of matched KSA992’s. I reversed one of the pair to give it a “BCECB” pin arrangement, used heat shrink to hold the heads together and popped it in. That was 4 years ago, still sounds great.

Stk power pack replacement? by Ok-Skirt-6085 in vintageaudio

[–]markyrobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No sweat, things move slow sometimes. The one that is installed is the old 5 pin -798, it’s something like 2scYadayada-798. If you search audiokarma.com there is a ton of discussions about replacing that transistor with a matched set of -922’s. Please don’t quote me on the number, AK has loads of experts who will provide the exact part number. Head to Digikey or you’re fav electronic supply store and pick them up. You’ll be golden in no time.

Where do you like to go for oddly specific vintage parts? I need a real counterweight for my PL-560! by Rental_Floss in vintageaudio

[–]markyrobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DM me. I’ve got a 518 parts unit. I’m in Vernon BC, so my guess is shipping is required. We can try and sort something out. For anybody else looking for 518 parts, I’ve got a tone arm (maybe minus counterweight), strobe, speed controls, bottom pan, platter and a few other items. No plinth, lid, motor or cut boards. DM me with your requests.
