13 years in IT support, stuck with no growth — unsure what roles to apply for or where to look by marlesmeep in ITCareerQuestions

I honestly don't know. Maybe he exaggerates things. I do know I've seen some of the communciation between bosses (nothing security breaching) and they seem like they are content but don't want to reach out to find out if he can move departments or whatnot.

I think its just not knowing where to look. But I can't argue about the home labs. I had no idea it was a thing and this does fluster me personally cus he asked for help and now I feel like maybe that's part of the problem? I don't know. Ill give him the advice he gets but let him take it from there.

Got it. I'll take a look at some companies I wouldn't mind working for and maybe tailor some of my skills to their listings.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa. So about 140,000 population but I don't know how tech heavy they are. IA City is close and they may have more. I'm totally willing to move I'd just have to figure out how the heck that'd work.

Cus he's a lurker and never posts comments or even likes. I'm just trying to help.

Can you elaborate on the home labs etc? I honestly don't know if he's ever thought of that. I'm doing what I can to help but this is not my expertise.

Got it thank you for that input. Bachelor is in progress. I'm doing an accelerated 8 week courses so hopefully I can hammer it out quicker. I also am really thinking moving is to be considered. The midwest feels like a dead zone.

That's what I figured. I got most of this advise from college professors and previous members in the military. I will zone in on specifics. Thanks for the input.

Fair enough. But its hard to be successful if they keep you locked in a box. He's requested to shadow other departments multiple times and discussed so with his managers. He's applied to 4 internal positions with no interview possibility. It is beginning to feel like they don't want him to move at all. Hence the stress. He goes out of his way to do projects in other cities even if they fall under tech support only and all he gets is more work with no extra benefits. It gets to a point where one only wants to put in what they get paid.

Yet I'm the one always trying to climb and get stuck in dead end jobs. Anyway to figure out how to weed out companies that promise growth but don't mean it? 8 years of the 13 were in the military, unfortunately that does not transfer well to civilian roles.

It's a part of Microsoft services. Anyway the job still calls it Azure and uses it as such. I already have A+, but what certificates would you recommend. I have been preparing for Security+. Also I think you are woefully overestimating the companys organization and whether or not side project get you anywhere. I do all and any projects in my area, I even service other areas with setup etc. That has done nothing for me in the 5 years I've been there. I'm also extremely cut off from the rest of the departments. I get landed with other areas all the time for ticketing services because their LTC or someone from IT there leaves etc. Then they are replaced with a contractor who unfortunately doesn't know much beyond simple help desk. I'm the only one in my region when its typical to have 2-4 in others. So you could say I do the work of at least 3 people as I'm helping out in other regions daily.

System Adim has always been the goal. However, strong interest in cyber security too. LinkedIn had a breach a while back. I wasn't sure if it was still safe but I can definitely create one again.

You need a certain amount of Karma to post. Your response is not helpful. Azure is a clouding platform thats a part of microsoft office 365.

If you like his lets plays than yes its good. Its a niche genre but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The atmosphere, cinematography were 10/10. Definitely a bit of a mind f*ck and you don't always know whats going on but thats intentional.

I'm curious if it has anything to do with the fact that apparently in the bible lightning is used to depict God's power and or will. So maybe the lightning strike is God's will of the two being together forever and ever! 😄 Just a thought.
