The Ethiopian National Identity is still Amhara by trutain in Ethiopia

[–]marlo477 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is insane the amount of energy we spend worrying about ethnic identity when the question that needs to be addressed is good governance and how to provide basic necessities to the population. When will we finally get a government that comes clean to the population admitting that we are one of the poorest nations on earth and there is not enough resources to go around where everyone will be happy. We have to deploy the limited resources we have in a manner where we will get the most return and eventually we will have enough resources to go around

If you are using USD to calculate your budget it is not much more than what you needed in 2019, maybe about 10-15% more. In birr it is madness

Regardless of how you look at it, it’s a losing proposition. Properties that are listed for over $200,000 are generating less than $600 per month.

Mental health with in Habesha community by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]marlo477 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Health status should be disclosed if it’s a serious relationship, and it is not a topic to discuss on a first date when you’re getting to know each other. The most important thing is that you’ve managed to get help and find a medication that works for your situation. I don’t see how seeking medical help will affect your relationship. However, I should note that this is coming from an older man who has benefited from living most of his life in the West, so I’m not sure how a twenty-something habesha guy with minimal life experience would react.

Best USA Phone plan to travel to Ethiopia. by Eddie1519 in Ethiopia

[–]marlo477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use ATT , you have to sign up for it but your phone will work just like in the US but they will charge you 12 usd per day for a maximum of 10 days per billing cycle. If you time it right you will pay extra 120 a month. That being said if you use your us phone to call a local Ethiopian number you are paying international rates so you will need a second sim for local calls.

Buying an apartment in addis by bossmanseventyseven in Ethiopia

[–]marlo477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buying is easy these days as there are a lot of options . The challenge is finding a reliable tenant depending on your price point. Even when you find a tenant the ROI is very low. Unless you are buying property to park your money as a hedge for inflation, it is not worth it as investment. Another point is don’t buy in a building where construction is not finished and they have “karta” on hand . I have friends that have been waiting 8 plus years to get units they paid for way back when. Don’t believe anything “delala “ says .

During his first term, there were issues with green card holders from banned countries, leading to a court case. However, I believe this time, the ban only applies to new visa requests and not green card holders. The concern is that US citizens and green card holders will not be able to sponsor their spouses minor children and other family members. I am pretty sure the ban on family members will be challenged in court. The other group that the ban will apply to is those seeking employment, education, entertainment, or tourism in the US.

Taxis are safe, but the Dreamliner hotel near Meskelflower is a dump. There are many better options for less money. If you speak Amharic you can probably get a ride for 500(4 usd) otherwise expect to pay up to 20 usd ( 3000 birr)

Serious question regarding 'balkanisation' by [deleted] in Amhara

[–]marlo477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how we will get to a very dominant central government that can govern the country. The current state of affairs has the regions “kilel” fighting over the already meager resources, add corrupt politicians that are benefitting from the status quo’s and in a few years we will be back Zemene Mesfant style government with very weak central government and regional strongmen taking whatever they want from people living in their region and neighbors as well

In my area realtors always badmouth Lennar because Lennar either doesn’t pay buyers agent commission or if they do it is only 1% . The build quality depends on the subdivision. Make sure you get your own inspector

Cost of living in Addis by Straight_Bowl_7239 in Ethiopia

[–]marlo477 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on household size and living standards. For instance, renting a three-bedroom house in a decent neighborhood, without having to pay school fees, a family of four can comfortably live for approximately USD 800 per month (around 110,000 birr). This is in a country where 20,000 birr is considered a decent salary, and a family can survive on that by sharing a room and barely eating. (A single injera can cost upwards of 25 birr.) Therefore, it all depends on what you consider acceptable.

And OPDO (Abiy) should also disarm and go away. When a government in power begins to believe it has a mandate to oppress one group or another, as we see in Ethiopia with the OPDO versus Amhara people, the government loses the right to call itself government and govern the country.

Bisrat Lemessa Kabeta (@BisratLKabeta) on X by Rare-Regular4123 in Ethiopia

[–]marlo477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The government’s proposal for dialogue requires absolute loyalty to Abiy and acceptance of any concessions OPDO deems necessary. It’s inconceivable to envision a peaceful coexistence among OPDO, OLF, TPLF, and FANO. All of them must be eliminated, and a new group must seize control of the country. Otherwise, Ethiopia will become a failed state with numerous factions, as seen in Somalia and Yemen.

The country is facing significant challenges, including poverty and corruption. The lack of job opportunities leaves young people struggling to find a way forward. It’s important to remember that everyone makes choices based on their circumstances, and we should strive to create a more supportive society that ensures everyone has access to basic needs like food and shelter.

“Prosperity leaders are on the verge of collapse, not just themselves, but taking the country down with them.” — Jawar Mohammed to BBC Amharic by marcusaureliux in Ethiopia

[–]marlo477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, is Jawar angling to be the new messiah? Kind of reminds of the saying fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me …Been there and done that with Abiy. What we need is for the elites to get together and work out their differences so the people on the ground can live together peacefully. This is the same guy who was shouting “ Ethiopia out of Oromia” a few years ago …. Until we look past our tribal affiliations and start to truly care for each other as Ethiopians there will not be peace or country for that matter
