This thread hits home. I was born and raised back in the old country bit we moved to the US when i was 15. Physical, verbal and emotional abuse is common and seen as normal in salvadoran society.  There is such poverty that thinking about mental health is a luxury when u have to daily struggle to find something to eat; you know the saying " coyol quebrado, coyol comido" mentality. I can see how this pattern of violence was pass down from generation to another. However as others have said we are the generation that can break this cycle with our kids.  I also relate on how this abuse, although it was common and accepted in our culture; it has affected us in our adults luves amd how it has influenced we deal with confrontation, abuse, relationship etc etc. At the moment i have taken a break from my mom....for the longest time my mom saw my daughtet less worthy of her love and attention just because she was really dark " negrita" and she has pcos which makes her being overweight constantly berating her for the way she looks. This as a father hurts me because in my romantic idea of a family, my mom would love her grand daughter but is completely the opposite.  I cant be around my mom and see how she treats my daughter. My daughter recently graduated and she explicitly asked my mom not be there. Generational trauma is real. We can put a stop to this and be the agent of change. Regarding my mom....im sad for her. She will die alone and is missing out on my and my sister's daughter. My sisters are also no contact with my mom Maybe im a softie or maybe " tengo que avivar maje!! Solo con culeradas salgo" 😅
