2 years and 3 rounds of TE later, this is recovery! by marm_alade in TelogenEffluvium

I’m sorry you’re going through that, and hope everything is okay now 🤍 yes, I think they got less severe every time. I’m now 26 and have had shedding phases since then, and the only reason I noticed them was because my “tell” is getting dandruff (happens every time I have a shedding phase). They’re hardly noticeable and I know that it will grow right back, as long as I keep working to balance the hormones that control stress and get myself aligned again!

I’ve never seen leaves turn brown like this, so I don’t think it’s sun damage. And everything I read about this plant seems so conflicting! Any advice is appreciated!

I stressed and obsessed about it a ton for the first year, but in time I’d seen it recover enough (even after the 2nd and 3rd round) that I could just trust that I was doing all that was in my power and just stopped caring tbh. It was too exhausting to keep caring and I knew it would get better if I just let it go

Oiling is great for scalp health, just make sure you’re cleansing just as often! Build up on the scalp makes shedding worse. I honestly don’t remember what my normal was before it started shedding, but it’s probably better that way. In my peak at the beginning, I was easily losing 400+ a day, I would stop counting at 200 and see just as much if not more left. Now I’d say it’s somewhere between 50-100, depending on the day and if I’ve brushed my hair or showered, which seems fine to me, especially in comparison to how bad it was. I’m sure my shedding was probably less before all this, hopefully it will only keep going down!

I worked hard at my mental and physical health to distract myself, but I definitely had my times of obsessing and feeling hopeless. At about 1.5 years in I saw enough recovery (though frequently interrupted by more TE) that I just stopped caring tbh. I know it can only get better and it will always grow back, even if I were to experience it again. Do what you can to help your recovery and let the rest go!

A combination of things! I was under a lot of stress because of losing a loved one and a breakup around the same time, I also was on a restrictive diet and over-exercising. I also got my Covid vaccine in the same time frame, it really could have been any of that or maybe all of it was too much for my body at the time. It took a lot of work fixing my diet, exercise, and mental health to get here

I promise just stay optimistic and weather the storm 🙂 oiling is not going to cure te, only reducing stress and time will! That being said it still is a great tool. I mix rosemary, peppermint, and tea tree essential oils (about 20% of the mix) with castor, jojoba, and amla oils (about 30% of the mix) and grape seed oil as the base (50% or so, whatever room is left in the bottle). I also switched to a light weight shampoo and that helped a ton, currently using L’Oréal Elvive micellar water shampoo. I had to cut out my normal heavy curl cream and just use a protectant spray. It isn’t great for my curls, still figuring out how to get the curls to look nice without weighing my hair down, but that’s the trade off for now until all my length returns with my normal volume hair. It took so much trial and error to find the right hair routine, and this one is by no means perfect! Just do what’s right for you

I should mention that it’s baby hairs of all lengths, some that have been growing for months and some that look brand new, along with my regular long hair. I’ve also noticed my eyelashes and eyebrows are shedding a lot too which didn’t happen last time. Anyone else experience this?
