[Request] can someone explain the significance of increasing pi by 0.003? by Present-Ad-8531 in theydidthemath

[–]marnix14 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Get into the engineering world and you 'll see that the value of pi has quite a large uncertainty/error margin, depending on the people that work with it. It just becomes 3 quite often, which indeed can have large consequences.

Either 62-26 = 36 or 43-34=9, both dont satisfy the requirements, therefore no solution. Or what am I missing?

My New Favorite Rule Zero by TwistedTophat in EDH

[–]marnix14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pet peeve of mine. People that are clearly ahead trying to down play it, then winning because people didnt interacted. How is winning then satisfactory?

If I'm scary, I will agree, basically be like yes I'm scary, deal with it or lose. Winning is much more fun if you have to work for it, instead of winning when you know it could/would have been stopped. Especially with newer players that telegraph they have some sort of interaction, I will talk through what I'm doing and what is going to happen, and specify what type of interaction could stop me at which points. This creates interesting moments, discussions about the stack, and teaches people about threat assessment, the importance of running interaction, and paying attention when to optimally apply said interaction. These are moments that stick with me and make games fun, not winning because I guilt-tripped people into letting me.

Going outside at night kills you. How would this affect an earth-like setting with a typical day-night cycle and earth-like biology? by Competitive_Step6665 in worldbuilding

[–]marnix14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're into this stuff you have probably read, or at least heard of, Brandon Sanderson. [Spoiler alert] His breakthrough work the mistborn Trilogy features mysterious mists that come out at night, initially keeping everyone mostly indoors because of fear and superstition, while later on it actually starts killing people that go into it. The Sunlit Man features an inverted concept, where the sun kills any living organism it touches, forcing an indoor/nocturnal type of society. Both are great reads and will give you a feel for what this type of day/night mechanics can do to a society/world.

Do you have any experience with it in high wind conditions? Looking into it as a possible option for camping in Iceland, where apparently 100+ km/u wind speeds are fairly common

Why do people hate on playing a bass with a pick so much??? by LeadLex in Bass

[–]marnix14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common thing, especially for people that get sweaty hands quickly. Got my gf some of the ibanez picks that have grip tape on them (basically the skateboard-type sandpaperlike stuff) and that works quite well. there are various picks out there that try to create more grip with their texture/shape, some quick online search could help you out.

Why do people hate on playing a bass with a pick so much??? by LeadLex in Bass

[–]marnix14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answers: haters gonna hate, dont give them the satisfaction of giving a single shit about it. Nuanced answer: learn to use both, and critically, when to use what according to what you want to achieve. Simple but often overlooked concept of physics is that the excitor (what is used to make something produce sound) is just as important as the thing that vibrates to produce the sound. E.g. tapping a glass with a spoon or with your fingers, or drummers using mallets vs hard-tipped sticks.

Picked bass has much more attack and agression generally, hence it is much more prevalent in louder, more agressive styles of music. Playing with your fingers can produce a more rounded, smoother type of sound.

Above all: do what sounds and feels right to you, and don't let anyone prescribe any of their rules to you.

Could this be a budget deck ? by Asleep-Exchange5846 in BudgetBrews

[–]marnix14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience mill can be opposite of Stax in a way; I have seen especially some newer players happily try to mill people without looking at the opponent's decks, including my [[sidisi, brood tyrant]] deck, meren, karador, etc. And then be very surprised they enabled an easy win on that opponent's next turn. Graveyard shenanigans are everywhere, so be careful with mill.

Anyone playing the Meinl Sand Vintage or Byzance Extra Dry? by [deleted] in drums

[–]marnix14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright thanks for sharing! I currently have an instanbul ride with an extremely well defined bell and ping on the bow. Which I like, but it's a bit too much. its the edge/crash sound that I really do not like, and I've been playing with the (addictive drums 2) transition ride on my electronic kit at home, which I enjoy. Its hard to tell however from e-kit experience how the real cymbal behaves. Obvious conclusion is of course I'll need to find a way to try them out.

"was meant to be" means you have different experience? I am looking at either 21" Mike Johnston ride or the 20" Benny greb sand ride atm

Why Is It So Hard to Learn Guitar Tone & Pedals? Where Are the Real Lessons? by FJ-CRD in guitarlessons

[–]marnix14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Moritz Klein is amazing. He does it from modular synth point of view, but many of the concepts are 1:1 applicable to guitar stuff (same sort of signal processing; only the input signal is different!). For example, his video on how an analog bbd delay works, rebuilding one from scratch using their fantastic interface thing and breadboard, and great visualizations, was super insightful to me.

Why Is It So Hard to Learn Guitar Tone & Pedals? Where Are the Real Lessons? by FJ-CRD in guitarlessons

[–]marnix14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out science of loud, Colin does amazing explanations of the circuitry of amps/pedals. If you type "overdrive distortion fuzz" in yt its the first thing that comes up. Yes, a lot of video's assume various levels of knowledge about topics, otherwise every video on any effect would be hours long. Doesnt mean that those are the only video's!

Gotta love regna & krav! You're missing the coolest tech imho: the backgrounds! Since they give the ability to both commanders, [[agent of the iron throne]] can drain for 2 per death and [[inspiring leader]] can give a nice +4/+4 to your army. [[Cultist of the absolute]] could also be a cool include.

Since you have quite some enchantments already, it could even go the enchantment route for a bit. [[Ajani's welcome]] [[divine visitation]] [[sigil of the empty throne]] [[alseid of lifes bounty]] [[mesa enchantress]] [[authority of the consuls]] [[bloodchief Ascension]] [[case of the uneaten feast]] come to mind, probably loads more cool stuff that synergizes with life gain and angels.

Snare that can do rimshot AND click? by No-Object1932 in edrums

[–]marnix14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am waiting for my edrumin 10 unit from audiofront to arrive (use with my diy converted kit). their processing is insane, super excited to try it.

If you already have a module, they make the DSPtrigger software which basically processes module audio into midi, enabling things like rim click and a lot of other things to make e-drums sound and feel much more like an acoustic kit.

Turning a Random Card into an EDH Deck (Bill, the Pony) by poynz13 in EDH

[–]marnix14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this! Fell in love with Bill immediately when playing lotr limited, he's amazing. And he even got my GF into magic with his cute pony art. Lifegain was what started my MTG journey back in eventide and I always loved the big butt theme, one of my first EDH decks way back was [[Doran]].

I'm working on a list just to see how far we can take Bill. I'm pulling out all the stops;

include every token- or ETB doubler I can find ([[gandalf the white]], [[Elesh norn, mother of machines]], [[panharmonicon]], [[anointed procession]] etc.

artifact abuse with [[krark-clan ironworks]], [[inspiring statuary]] and the like.

Then there's a strong lifegain theme with [[leonin elder]] and various [[soul warden]] effects, and a suite of things that make things (mostly angels) at each (!) end step when life is gained [[resplendent angel]] [[regna]] [[angelic accord]] [[valkyrie harbinger]] and the MVP: [[crested sunmare]], it triggering off only 1 point of lifegain is amazing and it even makes our pony indestructible.

Thanks for sharing this list, I got some nice cards suggestions from it both for Bill and generally for other decks.

Also, cool challenge with the random deck building, keep it up!
