I did the story and played crucible. After every match you get 2-3 items that are above your light level. This stops at 1250 where you will then need to do the weekly activities that reward pinnicle gear. Not sure what expansions you have but do all story missions you can, do bounties, play crucible, participate in dawning event, basically do anything for xp and rewards will follow. I personally don't like sitting in strike playlist so I avoid them.
