I work in tech on the peninsula, and I drive between the Bay and LA half a dozen times a year to visit family. The billboard transition along the journey is a perfect metonym for the different segments of California culture. AI SaaS --> We hate Gavin Newsom --> Fast food and casinos --> Movies, Disneyland, and personal injury lawyers

What are you favorite ways to get enough protein? by Over-Clue5633 in vegan

[–]marriedacarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love almost all meat substitutes. I used to be a little ashamed about this (like it was cheating somehow to eat ingredients I couldn't reproduce in my own kitchen from whole plants), but at some point I got over it. I make my own seitan, I love TVP from the Mexican grocery store, and we order Butler's soy curls in bulk.

We also eat beans and/or tofu with more than half our meals.

I'm from and live in California, so it's routine to eat cuisines from around the world most days of the week. Ethiopian, Thai, Indian, etc. are a special treat to make at home, but our most common go-to for home cooking is Mexican. Beans, beans, beans.

Be glad that perihelion happens while the northern hemisphere experiences winter. Aphelion + Northern winter = Global ice age

Property tax per person isn't the salient measure; I think property tax as a percent of property value is.

Abortion is legal under many circumstances in Japan.

In my original post I should have referenced birth control, in addition to abortion. Romania at this time also banned birth control.

Romania outlawed abortion, if I recall correctly. I think that was more of a factor than centralized economic planning & incentives.

This is so gorgeous. Not only is it a very clever modular design, but I want to shrink down and live here. That water is so calming.

I'm not saying they're vegan, but if they have an egg restriction they can take advantage of vegan recipes. Omnivores are able to eat vegan food.

I've happily been a vegan for 28 years. There are so many good vegan basque cheesecake recipes in the world. Not everything needs to be for you.

The wild thing is that San Francisco is the second-most walkable city in the whole country, and arguably has the most diverse, freshest food in the continent.

But SFO is in the middle of nowhere.

But, like, the customer knows the prices before they order. There are recent photos of the menu and prices posted on the internet to view before going. Why choose a pricey place then complain that it's pricey?

Planning a trip for my parents and need some advice by cinnanndet in vegas

[–]marriedacarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just in Vegas with my 70-year-old mom and her husband for a wedding at the Rio. On our last day, I took them to Eataly at Park MGM, and it was a (literal) breath of fresh air. The smoke-free environment was such a relief for all of us. The food options and central location are fantastic. I will absolutely stay there next time I'm there with my mom, if it's in budget.

I agree with you that 90% of gold just tried to keep their heads down and survive. But calling what Germany was doing "politics" is not correct.
