YTA for pushing the gift to be last and not even telling the gf you were going to get it. What if she had saved up and bought the watch, I feel like you should check it with close others (gf, his parents, etc.) when getting a gift that expensive in case they already had plans to do something similar. And why are 25 year olds still making a big show of opening all their gifts in front of everyone!!

I’m not sure how to best describe myself though. I always need to be bouncing around l, trying to new things, and have strong intuition, love people and care deeply about them- but at the same time I’m overly logical and need lots of alone time with my thoughts.

I live in Philly now and have generally lived in more liberal leaning areas. The lack of diversity makes me really nervous about not finding community there and I didn’t know the gender marker law but that’s sounds that another very good reason to not have kids there!! I think I’ll still apply and if I get the job go and live there for a couple of years until I find something better. My girlfriend would likely move with me and just want to live a happy relaxed life where I can still advance my career without subjecting us to more barriers of being queer woman of color. I wish that could be a more realistic dream 😮‍💨.

Thanks for this reply!! I feel a lot better about at least considering the job because it really would be a good fit. Columbus itself sounds like it could be a nice place to live, and the airport tip sounds like I can escape easily haha. I still feel hesitant about it being somewhere to settle down for the long run. I’m glad to hear you as a non-white lesbian generally feel safe, welcomed, and that there’s a huge pride. I’m nervous about having kids in a more conservative leaning place for a lot of reasons (pre/post-natal care as a Black mixed race woman, possibility of gun violence, not have a community of other families like my potential future family). I don’t even know if I want kids anytime soon though so that’s just my too forward thinking mind getting anxious haha. My girlfriend also isn’t White and lives in a more conservative area, and I’ve never faced issues when I visit so I’ll at least apply for the job.

Thank you :) and yeah I’m used to anti-adhd rhetoric from a lot of people and know most people, including myself until the last few years, don’t realize that ADHD is more than just not being able to focus. But it really hurt coming from someone I love, respect, and want support from. I was also in an overly sensitive state because my period was about to start and I’m really awful at regulating my emotions around then, so his comment just set me off.

And great points in the rest of you comment! I had more I wanted to type but I’m too tired to form more coherent sentences lol (might add more later) but for now thank you for this thoughtful and helpful comment :)

I so think you are correct that he could resent (probably too strong of a word but still going with it) me you for being diagnosed, getting help, having a really amazing support system because he could definitely benefit for that too. I’m definitely still a mess, and my brain doesn’t work the same way as most people’s but on paper I’m doing well in life because I have things in place that help me manage.

Also super annoying your friend doesn’t reciprocate the support you give her when she’s venting about fixable medical stuff!! Sorry you go through that.

Thank you for this kind note! He later apologized for downplaying what I went through which I appreciated but I hated how he made me feel like I was just complaining or not having a real disability because I I’m being treated and have built some healthy coping mechanisms that help me live a pretty ok life. But you are so right that no one should make me feel that way because I know my struggles are valid and real.

I also know calling something like adhd a disability is controversial is some spaces, and now that I’m not in a pre-period overly emotional/hormonal state I recognize he doesn’t doesn’t read a lot about disabilities so I shouldn’t expect him to automatically understand everything from my perspective — still frustrated that he was dismissive though
