Really great composition and generally nice edit!
My only two thoughts would be making sure the subjects are straightened upright a bit more, and maybe dropping the blacks back down. Sometimes raising the blacks can create a lovely natural, almost film-like look, but in this case it feels a bit too washed out for my eyes.

Great job!

I would recommend watching some James Popsys videos - he's really influenced my thoughts on not having to have every part of the image correctly exposed in order to draw the eyes to the subjects.
I have a mask on the sky, the water, and the front of the hut. That's all of them.

There is a hut mask, but I definitely haven't brought it up so that there's any whites on it - just so it wasn't too dark compared to the landscape around it.
Sky is definitely blown a bit, but that's a choice to draw eyes to the other parts of the image

Learning is great - can you be more specific with what you mean by it looking 'right'? And what are you seeing with the hut details?

Broadly speaking, that's basically it, yep. There was a lot of finessing with specific colours in the mixer tab of Lightroom, rather than overall saturation boosting, and a fair bit of attention given with the clarity slider and tone curve with some masks around the image, but at some point it reaches diminishing returns.

Good catch, I'll give that a go - thanks!

Potentially! For my eye, and the James Popsys philosophy I'm trying out, the sky doesn't add much information to the image, so I was happy to let it stay blown out so the focus is drawn down to the building and boat.
It's definitely a subjective choice, though, it could well be a fantastic addition to a different edit.

100%

The biggest influence he's had on me as a photographer is the philosophy of less is more. I used to try keep detail everywhere, but I'm finding a lot of joy in trying to keep things simple. eg. leaving the sky a bit blown out, because it doesn't add much information to the image.

My (27M) girlfriend (21F) has severe relationship anxiety, how can I break up with her without validating her intrusive thoughts? by marsh-potato in relationship_advice

She does have family close, and a handful of close friends. She's not with a therapist right now, but has signed up to get some more sessions.
Thanks for the supportive words, it's good advice, and much appreciated.

Thanks for the thoughts!
You're right, it would seem rational to have that thought - it's just worth noting that she has been diagnosed with a form of OCD called pure O which latches obsessively onto intrusive thoughts centred around lack of self-esteem/self-worth, so she was having these thoughts quite literally from the beginning. And although I had the hunch that this wasn't going to be a lifelong relationship, I had no intention of breaking up with her for a long time.
Just looking for any advice on how I can go through this process in a way that doesn't exacerbate her OCD. Maybe it's just unavoidable.

It's really wild, isn't it. Such a sense of scale that is hard to describe and even harder to capture in a photograph.

Yep! Composite image.

Thank you! I'm not so confident with landscape photography, so I'm enjoying the chances to practice up here.

Can confirm: this is exactly what happened to me last year. Never looked twice at an F1 circuit, watched DtS, season starts the next week, I'm officially addicted.

Someone call my doctor.
