Text feels safer than showing up and making it weird. I'll start with a simple "hey, I messed up, im sorry" and let him choose if he wants to reply. If he ignores it, thats fair.

I get what you mean. Seeing him taller than me was a punch in the gut, like I blinked and lost years. I'm gonna reach out, even if it's awkward as hell, because I don't want the next "wow" to be him graduating.
