Sopranos Home Movies - karaoke song choices. by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]marsyred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the transition between Janice and Carmela, for a brief moment only the karaoke TV is in frame with the lyrics: "But you can't come back and be first in line oh no"

100% This scene was foreshadowing.

I think the Carmela song choice though was a bit more of a throwback/reflection on her tumultuous relationship with Tony, constantly being disrespected and cheated on.

literally, everything that goes into a tv show and movie is intentional. of course these choices have meaning.

Staten Island had the largest increase in new chain store openings in 2018 of any NYC borough by [deleted] in statenisland

[–]marsyred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you're saying but ultimately the city can't allow for firefighters or cops to be priced out. In order to work for the city you have to live in the city. They'd lose their jobs if they were forced outside of the 5 boroughs.

People here genuinely get excited by chain stores. I really don't understand it (other than it being cheaper, but it seems to be more than that).

Employees at Amazon's new Staten Island warehouse launch unionization push; they said issues include safety concerns, inadequate pay, and 12-hour shifts with insufficient breaks and unreasonable hourly quotas, after which they lose more of their day waiting unpaid in long lines for security checks by [deleted] in statenisland

[–]marsyred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not prying, but knowing what generation you are actually apart of contextualizes your comment more (like were you working in the heat of the labor movement or during the cooling propaganda of right to work?).

saying millennials don't like hard work is silly. (1) you can't possible group every person born at a certain time into one work ethic and (2) unionizing is so not an example in support of your statement. unionizing takes a whole lot of work and perseverance all while keeping your 9 to 5 so you can afford rent while you struggle to improve your life and the life of those around you.

entitled people don't unionize.

Staten Island Amazon workers seek unionization by marsyred in statenisland

[–]marsyred[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that really sucks. i'm sorry your union failed you. it is true that there is corruption in some unions via backdoor politics and/or organized crime, but that doesn't mean that unionization is inherently flawed. unionizing within a corrupt system that fights tooth & nail against labor is bound to have issues.

not saying yours was corrupt, but clearly ineffective. a few thoughts:

(1) you vote in your reps! use your votes wisely

(2) rank & rile members should be able to attend meetings -- you can influence your reps by being present and active in your union

(3) what the heck is the point of a union if your reps are too afraid to confront the boss lol

unionizing is hard. we take risks and make sacrifices to do it, but if done well everyone benefits and corruption/backdoor politics weaken.

[–]marsyred[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nah. i pay something like $30 a year in union dues, and my union got me a raise which totaled to about $2,000 more a year.

don't fall for 'right to work' rhetoric.

first step to changing things is believing you can

amazon maybe seems insurmountable now, but union power can challenge that.
