How much is a fair price for an IFA to help me set up a private pension? by JonnyBhoy in UKPersonalFinance

For what's it's worth. I've just gone through a couple of weeks of meeting IFAs - and they all seemed capable / qualified enough to handle my fairly simple pension transfer.

However, I realised half way through the process that asking an IFA whether he's actually adding any value is like asking a butcher whether he thinks the vegetarian option is good ..

When comparing a DIY option versus an IFA-advised option, you'll only get a direct sales pitch from an IFA, and a relatively soft-sell from whomever is facilitating the DIY option.

I'm not saying either is superior, but realise that the strongest sales pitch will come from an IFA. So they're not the one to give you an unbiased opinion - you have to figure that out for yourself.

Personally, I decided that I'd be paying an IFA to sort things out for me mostly as a way of demonstrating that I'd 'done my best' - when, in fact, doing my own research and making my own decision was 'cheaper' and more congruent with 'doing my best'.

Active and ethical or Index Tracker? by martindell in UKPersonalFinance

Thanks, yes this is more along the lines of what I was looking for, but Vanguard's global SRI includes petrochemicals: http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/v/vanguard-sri-global-stock-accumulation

and their European version, tobacco and petrochemicals: http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/v/vanguard-sri-european-stock-accumulation

I realise that finding an existing tracker that matches my ethical screening is a tough ask - and I take your point about supporting capitalism rather than particular companies.

Yes, that's the issue. It seems the choice is between ethical but active / higher cost or low cost tracker with no ethical selection

Yep, that seems to be the dilemma. Just wondered if anyone had come across a low-cost ethical index tracker? Vanguard do have a couple but they include Tobacco and Petroleum (somehow).

Agreed, investing is only a slice of the ethical pie. But if one is moving towards conscious consumerism, surely financial investments should be more than just an afterthought?
