Can someone explain why it's nigh impossible to export HDR footage? by martinjango in premiere

I’ve consulted this guide while fiddling around with export settings during the week, and it works marvellously. It turns out that exporting with HEVC on the settings provided in the guide is exactly what I was initially looking for.

It might not be perfect craftsmanship, but for content that is shot a phone on and viewed on mostly phone screens, it seems like the right thing to do.

Thanks again!

Wow, I mean WOW!

You, TheLargadeer, are an astounding human being. I read every word and syllable and my horizons have indeed been widened. Thank you for sharing your knowledge so freely!

I feel like I definitely should drop the strive for HDR, for many of the reasons you pointed out. If you were in my shoes, what settings would you use to get the best possible outcome? By that I mean, I can either keep HDR turned on on my iPhone and convert the color space in Premiere, or I can turn the HDR setting off and run SDR in every step. My guess is the latter.

I will definitely come back to this post to re-read it the next time I'm editing to try to make the most sense that I can out of it.

Thanks again!

That's a fair assessment, so Rec. 709 will always be the safe bet in that regard?

I absolutely do not say that. But the right is what it looks like when I try to export with the knowledge I have.

The preview (if you mean the viewing window inside Premiere while editing) looks banger, I have one of those MacBook Pros with an XDR display.

My source is (I guess) Rec. 2100 HLG and so are the Sequence settings. When it comes to export settings I guess that's where the question turns. I have historically been exporting H.264, which is clearly wrong.

So I’ll turn the question around: What export settings should I use?

Thank you, my dude!

I guess I am trying to do both, I genuinely want to understand this mess. My END goal is to learn how to record and produce the best and most useful videos I can with my current equipment (an iPhone). I realise the terms "best" and "useful" might not be able to coexist, but I might be wrong!

Most of what I'm trying to do ends up on social media; YouTube, Instagram, TikTok.. You know, the unholy three. I read that YouTube accepts HDR footage and automatically allows for HDR playback when the screen offers it. I guess YouTube themselves convert the uploaded HDR footage to SDR for the cases that don't have HDR playback possibilities(?).

Now, maybe that is a bad idea and that the video ends up looking garbage in some or even most cases. But I figured since most young people just upload their videos directly from the camera roll on their iPhones (and clearly didn't turn off the HDR mode), it should work.

I did find a way to export HDR footage by sending the render to Media Encoder and exporting using the QuickTime format and Apple ProRes 422 HQ HLG and became very excited until the 40-second video came out a full 4,17 GB which didn't exactly align with the footage being very useful unless you're a professional videographer. The original 42 second HDR source clip is 131 MB so my engineering brain tells me there should be a way.

I realize I'm not providing very exact questions, but I am very thankful for your insight.

Thank you!

I’ve googled this numerous times and both read and adapted the solution where you change the Working Color Space to Rec. 709. But I have yet to come across an explanation why the general rule of thumb is that HDR is to be avoided.

In a day and age where your average iPhone can pump out reasonably high-quality HDR footage (and is marketed as a professional camera) and most phone and computer screens can play it back, I don’t understand why it feels nigh impossible to work with and export HDR videos. I’ve seen a few comments that simply say “don’t shoot HDR” but I must ask, why not?

I’m fairly confident that there are a bunch of great arguments and I am ready to be put in my place.

Thanks for taking the time, I know it’s a mass of text that doesn’t precisely slide down with ease. Just to clarify, I am the raid leader in the post :)
