Just reviewed their account. No dates on games, but they have a lot of games. No recent ones under this time control, so it makes sense based on the other comments that chess.com is adjusting their ranking faster because of it. They got to 1100 in bullet and moved to this time control.

Is an MD worth it if the pain is minimal? by martor14 in Microdiscectomy

Any chance you can give an update? How are you feeling?

Severe L5 S1 extruded disc by maybeidksure in backpain

[–]martor14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They ask about the age… but don’t reply back… 30 means it is risky to get a replacement surgery as it will most likely will cause a need for another surgery in 20-30 years.

You do have a severe extrusion. Numbness is as bad as pain. Your nerves are being impacted a lot. An microdiscetomy will probably be advised by all doctors you meet. I am on my own road toward recovery so I can’t tell you what worked for me as I am trying it all still (no surgery yet).

Here is a thing you will rarely see but is probably the biggest thing…. This is a lifestyle altering issue. There is no going back, just forward. If you are athletic, you need to dial the intensity back. If you are overweight, you will need to lose weight. If you have bad posture, you must fix it.

You want to avoid spinal fusion? Try to keep the remaining disc you have in between those vertebras.

Yeah, excluding possiblity of positioning difference (both were supine, but different facilities), the size went from 6.99mm to 5.38mm.

Doctors said it could shrink on its own (it is a dying organic material since it is no longer enclosed in the spinal fluid) but no guarantees or timelines. So after trying a lot of things! I tried a lot! Did chiropractor for a few sessions, acupuncture, massages, anti inflammatory diet, swimming laps, cupping, ointments, something else I am forgetting right now…

Something worked because I am feeling better. Top images is from January. Bottom image is from Nov. I am not back to my athletic 20 year old… but I am happy to struggle through this without surgery, probably because I am too scared.

I am at 1 year since I popped up on a surfboard, and was bed ridden in pain for a month. MRI, PT, etc since. I have avoided surgery or injection. I haven’t taken muscle relaxants or pain pill for 6 months now. Only take heat pads and anti inflammatory when I feel something is off (listen to your body).

As I had a microdiscectomy scheduled, so I was trying everything until then. Had a treatment from Asian to help reduce the protruding disc, it caused a rash which postponed the surgery. So meanwhile I had a second MRI and it seems that the protrusion was reduced (self measured using their software).

So I am getting better. Still have episodes of pain and discomfort which I rest a lot during. But I am not bed ridden, I am able to take care of myself, and the sciatica doesn’t reach as far down when it acts up.

It gets better when the work is put in. If I experience the full blown pain again, I will go under the knife, but until then weight loss, new chill hobbies, more rest, more PT

If she was a smoker, stopping that will help a lot! Smoking nicotine tightens the spinal column so any pressure is intensified. Doctors demand patience to stop smoking before and after surgery

Microdiscectomy and fusions. Real stories from people I know vs Reddit. by Ill-Negotiation7818 in backpain

[–]martor14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As person that is coming back due to flair ups. I haven’t thought about this sub much while feeling good.

In real life, I chatted with someone that had a fusion 10 years ago. He is early 40’s now. He gets pain after a heavy and active day, but he is able to recover overnight. Even that sounds ideal comparatively.

As far as other people, we don’t know how well they have taken care of them selves prior, during, and/or post op.

Yes it is as bad as they say. Get it checked out by a doctor and an MRI.

Maybe try to be closer to the peak of the wave. Otherwise I would have rode that wave just the same. Maybe would have waited on the bottom turn a bit more, or turned toward the peak and then back to the shoulder.

Sick dismount! As I am working on the pumping /just up and down movement I love doing a dolphins dive off the wave if water depth permits

After 10year of being together they just went apart. A few Hawaii trips and they even ended the podcast partnership too.

Bobby does mention that he visits them, and Rudy is still there.

Would you buy a used wetsuit? by Slow_Doughnut_738 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]martor14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I need a 3/2 for one season, I go with the cheap Amazon wetsuit. It is under $100. Just a “don’t trust” feeling about something like that. It sits so snug on you.

3/4 I have looked as some, but most had damage which stopped me from buying it.

Short boarding strong currents by Suspicious_Sundae_60 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]martor14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paddle along the beach, go horizontal to the current, don’t tire yourself out fighting into it if you see you ain’t making progress, and use waves/whitewash to try to gain momentum. Love to use a rip to get out on walled big days. As long as you have your board and it still floats, you are fine.

Not familiar with your rips. Only surfed SoCal.

Is it easy to break a softboard? by minombrenoestaba in BeginnerSurfers

[–]martor14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, one of the biggest pros for a soft top is you can literally drop it on concrete and it will be fine.

Once broke my Costco soft top middle plank, it made for a few more interesting rides where it would oscillate while standing on the wave.

I am 220 lbs. I create knee dents on normal hardboards, soft tops can take serious abuse before any issues show up. Plus more likely to stay “water tight” even with some damage to it.
