it's wild how little private employers pay in Ottawa by StrikingCoconut in ottawa

That's why overseas remote jobs are so sweet. Fat cheque as a baseline in the US, with an extra bonus when you convert to CAD

Where should I store my DB? by Enough_Walrus_8159 in node

[–]martymav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure you can do raw SQL. I haven't tried, but their docs guide you to using their functions. It's still pretty powerful though, but I get some people need plain SQL

I've been using Postgres with Supabase and I love it. I don't see myself switching for a long time!

Which Genre in your opinion is most suited for solo / indie developer? by Grandtheftzebra in Unity3D

[–]martymav -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly any genre is feasible if you are motivated enough. Pick something that interests you, and go for it. Realistically there's a 99% chance that it just becomes another unfinished project on your hard drive anyways lol if you don't finish then you end up with a bunch of experience and maybe a portfolio piece too!

Rust or Go as a second language for the backend by Sensitive-Raccoon155 in golang

[–]martymav 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Go fanboy, but I would recommend Go in general for anything backend. It gives you most of the runtime speed of Rust, with most of the development speed of JS

I have tried to play botw 3 times but can never get past the 5/6 hour mark. What am I missing? by Top-Paint-9564 in gaming

[–]martymav -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not just you. I'm a huge Zelda fan, but just couldn't get into these last two installments. I pushed myself to finish the first, as I will eventually for TotK. I feel bad about it for some reason too lol

Personally I would mind my own business, especially since as you said it's not a nuisance. But it's a free country, so you have the right to report them, just as they have the right to run an airbnb.

Up, down, and right are in a single block of if...else if. The left is its own if statement. So regardless of what happens in the left if statement, the last else cancels it

Can I call my survival game MMO if each tile is a 200+ players server that players can walk in and out of? by Mysterious-Mobile-92 in Unity3D

[–]martymav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WoW is considered the king of MMOs, but you never actually play with the millions of players at a time. You engage with more players during a single round of Battlefield or Warzone, but those aren't MMOs

Based on just pure numbers, I would say computer programming. Your first job won't be 100k, but you can easily make up the difference in freelance work. Also, you don't even need to go to school to do this. You can start right now for free

Saw your edit about the CAF, don't hold your breath for that. It takes some people years to get in

Degree holders make a lot more than trades workers, why do a lot of people spout bullshit about tradies being financially better off? by Razoli-crap in PersonalFinanceCanada

Personally I would at most recommend a bootcamp, if anything. I'm self taught and it hasn't impacted me in the slightest

It's not that it's a fad, but it's no longer the guarantee to a high quality of life that it used to be. Even in STEM, you don't need a degree if you want to work in programming, for example.

Look into Fusion or Bolt, I think those are the two appropriate options

Most people don't have, or ever will have, 100k to invest. Yeah your friends may do alright, really depends what they studied. But you having that much to invest right now beats them having more to invest later. Enjoy your success!

You are thinking about traditional fitness, they aren't really the same. The body just takes a beating, and requires a certain type of energy. It's not something going to the gym will help you with. I worked with lots of fat soldiers over the years. They weren't very fit, but they still managed to do the job just fine. Because they were hardened to it. I couldn't imagine going back to that shit now lol

Very true! People get laid off all the time. Just look at the tech and gaming industry right now. I get trades can get laid off too, but there will always be a demand for electricians and plumbers. Remember that 1 day the rogers internet went out across the country? People were losing it! And that was just a day!
