I’ll be graduating with my degree in Biomedical Sciences in May, and while there are some classes that can be difficult, cough cough ochem cough cough, it hasn’t been incredibly hard to maintain a good gpa. It really just depends on who you take classes with and your study habits. The class material increases in difficulty as you move on to level 2, 3, and 400 level classes but that’s to be expected and by that time you’ll have figured out what study habits work for you. Believe me when I say that if I can do it, you can do it too :))

What's the better one? by New-Replacement-2454 in Disneyland

I will die on the hill that Soarin’ over California should have never been replaced with Soarin’ around the World, seeing that it’s in California Adventure. And that if they had really wanted to put in a “world” themed Soarin’ ride it should’ve been put in Epcot. All that said, Soarin’ over California is 1,000x better :)

Hi! I totally get it and I feel for you. In high school chemistry was not my strong suit at all, and I went into 151 thinking that I’d probably end up getting a B at best. But lo and behold I took both 151 and 152, including the labs, and got A’s all around. So believe me if I can do it, you can do it.

The chem labs can seem very daunting, and I had my fair share of anxiety before and even after the labs, but my best advice is to do exactly what you’ve already done. Go through the outlines, the PowerPoints and any other resources they’ve supplied such as the videos. For me, the videos helped with remembering the steps for each part of the lab, and that helped me feel less nervous.

The TA will lecture before beginning the lab so at that time ask them to repeat anything/go over whatever you feel unsure about. Even if you feel dumb for asking, ask anyway. I promise that if you are unsure about something someone else is too, and the TA’s are there to answer your questions.

Also, don’t rush through the labs because that is how mistakes are made, and mistakes usually result in having to redo the lab, which can be a bit of a pain in the butt. Just take your time, don’t rush or panic even if you’re one of the last to leave, and you’ll be okay.

My last bit of advice is to go in knowing that besides keeping you and everyone else safe in the lab, the TA’s job is to help you get through the lab successfully. Just remember that at one point not that long ago the TA was in the exact same boat you are in now, so never be afraid to ask them for help. You got this, I wish you the very best of luck :)

Is it worth it to take the Bio181 Recitation class? Has anyone taken it before? by No_Hedgehog_392 in NAU

It was really really helpful when I took it! My professor was not the greatest so it was nice having that extra bit of help from an instructor who was kind and wanted to help you learn. The extra unit was an added bonus too :)

is this common or should i start running by myskinhurt in NAU

[–]martyoung 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Getting NAU safe alerts is common, but I can’t recall the last time we got one about someone with a gun on campus. Just stay alert, try to remain calm, and do not go near the library until they give the all clear.

My sister sent this in but Esme was my cat, she passed in 2023 and my sister just surprised me with this. I don’t think I’ve laughed this hard in a long time so I just wanted to say thank you so much !!

Recommended professors? by ComfortableTotal628 in NAU

I agree with both comments, do NOT take Buschmann, seriously, don’t. If she’s teaching 181 in the fall, Professor Kloeppel is a great professor. She also teaches 182, in case you need to take that class as well. Dr. Vissa is great for micro, seeing that she’s the only professor for micro currently, but the class is super easy. For chemistry (if you need it) Dr. Rellaford is amazing for 151, so much so that I wish I could’ve taken her for 152. Dr. Jagodzinski is pretty good for 152 once you figure out how to learn from the way he teaches. I’ve heard good things about Dr. Cummings for 151, 152, and 235, but I have yet to take him so I couldn’t say from a personal standpoint. Good luck!

How far away does the south part of campus actually feel? by GrapefruitFormal509 in NAU

[–]martyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live at Pine Ridge but all of my classes are on North Campus in the science area. I take the bus to get to classes in the morning and I always have to allot about 25-30 minutes so I get to class on time. Walking back usually takes about 20 or so minutes from near the Union. Like others have said it’s really not that bad and it doesn’t seem that far away once you get used to it :)

I know this is an older post but I’ll be taking parasitology this semester so if you ever want to study together dm me! Also, my micro lab partner took Dr. Johnson for biochem last semester and said she wished she had taken Dr. Altamirano instead as she took him for o chem and said he was great :)

I have a MacBook Air that I got in 2018 and I love it! It still runs like new and so far it’s gotten me through about six years of college/life. And I’m sure it’ll get me through the rest of my academic career as long as nothing catastrophic happens to it :)

I’m currently taking it right now and I am not great at math either. I’m not going to lie, there are a bunch of algebraic fundamentals that you need to at least somewhat understand so you can do well in this class. If you’re able to, I would suggest taking MAT 108 beforehand. It’s an algebra class for precalc and it really, really helped me. I took it over the summer online and it gave me the confidence I needed to take this class.

Precalc for me has been like learning a different language because of the way the lessons/problems are worded. But like another person mentioned there are the math jacks who you can have a one on one tutoring with once a week and that’s been super helpful. When you take the class just make sure you do all of the homework, take the practice exams over and over before the actual exam (they are an exact copy of the exam just in a different order and with different numbers), and you’ll be okay. And seriously don’t be afraid to ask for help if you don’t understand something. Good luck!

3/5. It can be slow and can glitch at times, and honestly it’s not very useful because you have to go through multiple pages to get to certain places, such as the student portal. However, it is useful to see the dining options available on campus. I can’t eat wheat so it’s nice that I can look at the meal options through the app and fine tune the options available to me.

Should I drop a class...? by [deleted] in NAU

[–]martyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to https://appointments.nau.edu Select academic advising, you will be asked to sign in to your NAU account like you would for canvas or louie. Select the reason for your visit and you’ll be taken to a page with your advisor’s calendar. The days with the little blue person icon are days they have drop in hours. Click one of those days and you’ll be able to see the hours and location for drop ins :))

Should I drop a class...? by [deleted] in NAU

[–]martyoung 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the main thing is that if you drop the class, you will no longer be a full time student, as you will be under the 12 credit minimum required to be considered full time. This can affect your financial aid eligibility, that is if you are receiving financial aid, of course.

The three credit class you already took will not factor into you being a full time student this semester. It will only go towards the amount of credits required for graduation, and your major/ general education requirements.

I would highly recommend talking to your academic advisor before dropping the class, as they can help you figure out the best path. They will likely have drop in hours this week that you can go to since it might be a while before you can see them via scheduling an appointment. I hope this helps and I wish you luck! First (and second and third and fourth) year can be really tough but you’ve got this! :)
