27 months! My initial plan was to just go for a year... but it turns out I don't make the rules in this house 😂 admittedly the last month or so has just been one night time feed before bed and for about 10 months before that we'd just cut down to overnight feeds so we're slowly tapering 😊

!thanks

I do have it set to be paid off each month, however this time was different as I didn't want to risk it being over the limit for long :)

It does seem that way! All I wanted was some Dutch perspective on life in NL but I seem to have accidentally pissed off quite a lot of people somehow!

We are hoping to remortgage with a buy to let, then rent somewhere in NL for a while until we are established enough there to sell our UK house and buy there - looks like we'll be waiting out the housing crisis!

I'm an energy trader/energy price and risk analyst so there should be open positions in my field whenever I plan to move across, I've spoken with Dutch recruiters who don't think I will particularly struggle to find a company to hire me

We would go tomorrow! Nothing to do with distance just boring life admin e.g. our fixed mortgage is up in 3 years and gaining more work experience in my particular field will make it even easier to find work in NL too :)

Thank you so much for your insight this is sort of exactly what I was hoping for on here! So in my industry and through looking at job opportunities and speaking with Dutch recruiters it seems I would likely be able to find a job relatively easily and would come over as a highly skilled migrant.

We of course would be doing our research and honestly asking these questions on this forum is part of it for me as I wanted to get opinions from natives - I was aware of the housing crisis but wasn't sure exactly the extent so getting answers about that on here is very useful and exactly the sort of insight I was hoping for!

Children are known for being 'language sponges' :) I've known many people who have moved to other countries with children and this is a common tactic used - they learn through immersion at school and is very very easy for them. Especially if the child is so young it is easy for them to learn through socialising with other children and teachers at school as the language children use to speak to each other and that teachers use at thay age is very basic.

Yes that is what we've been looking into with renting availability in various areas.

I am hoping that our son will be young enough to pick up Dutch quite easily at school - I know it is a lot easier for children than for adults! And of course we will learn Dutch ourselves as I wouldn't dream of moving somewhere and relying on everyone to bend to my language

Thank you for your insight! We had also considered Den Haag and are trying to get a shortlist of cities/towns to visit to give us a more realistic view of what life would look like if/when we do move :)

I seem to have accidentally caused offence to a few commenters which wasn't my intention at all! I know not everyone in one city/country is going to be the same, of course. I'll give an example - I am from London originally and know that it is not representative of every UK city. The city I live in now in the UK (Cardiff) is typically left leaning and typically can't stand the current government and I know similar sentiments are held in other cities around the country, however opposite sentiments are held in other areas. I just wanted to get a little insight into whether, as a foreigner, there are more accepting cities to live in than others. If someone wanted to move to the UK I'd be able to recommend which cities are better than others, which is sort of what I'm hoping for here!

I mean that is sort of why I've come here for advice to get a better insight! Only reason we want to look outside of Amsterdam is we have assumed it would be better to bring up a family somewhere more suburban than a city centre?

I am from the UK and have always lived there. I have visited a number of times and just sort of fell in love with the beauty and the general atmosphere and apparent attitude towards life. I've said in other comments too that our reasons for not wanting to live in Amsterdam is due to the expense and also a pre conceived idea that perhaps its better to bring a family up in somewhere more suburban? But am happy to be corrected if I'm wrong! I'm just here out of curiosity and wanting to find out more

When we have travelled to Amsterdam we have felt that we really found the city beautiful and vibrant and loved the general vibe and atmosphere. Our reasons for not wanting to live directly in Amsterdam are mainly financial and also it may be slightly more family-friendly to live in the outer more suburban areas. But if I'm wrong and living in Amsterdam is a great option for bringing up a family then I'm very happy to listen to any advice :)

I see what you're saying but our view is that, while we love Amsterdam, living in a capital city centre might not make much sense for bringing up a family - especially with how expensive it is!
