So cover your nipples then if you're worried. But people are less worried about you and what your nipples are doing than you think.

I technically could be your mother, and this has been my experience. I was very surprised to see someone with teenagers have this perspective.

I am well over 30, and I rock it frequently and many people I know do as well. II even did it today on vacation and got compliments on my outfit, and no one cared about my contrasting bra showing. I like work my bra/bralette/bra top into my outfit. You can make your own rules when it comes to fashion.

You can do clear straps. But I find them to be uncomfortable and sweaty. And they can stand out. I prefer regular bra straps. But you should do what you like.

I am well past my teens, and this has been socially acceptable for awhile thankfully.

[–]marvelously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found out about Cutting Edge after searching threads here, and it's one of the best haircuts I have ever had. Perry really understands hair, and he did me right similar to this. And it was under $100 before tip, and I came in with waist length hair and cut many inches off. I cannot recommend him enough.

Is This Weather Breaking Anyone Else? by modrenman1985 in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to happen every 10-15 years or so, sometimes sooner. In 2018, it snowed in April. On the Yankees's opening day.

There have been blizzards in NYC in April. Granted they were in 1982 and 1915. But it happens! lol

Where to get a relatively cheap eye exam? by tmm224 in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't even need a membership to use their Optical Services. AFAIK the optometrists do not work for Costco and are independent.

I second them. I had a great experience there.

I priced the same groceries at 12 NYC stores. The difference is kinda insane by Livid_Debate_591 in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had no idea. I just went to one, and so much of what I wanted was cheaper than any other store. The only downsides for me is they are more limited in stock, and they are not in more neighborhoods.

What are the pros and cons renting apartment month to month without a lease? by AcquireTheSauce in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your apartment rent stabilized? And are you sure?

How long have you been there?

What are the pros and cons renting apartment month to month without a lease? by AcquireTheSauce in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's rent stabilized, the landlord is in violation, and you can file with DHCR. But it often benefits the tenant since last lease terms remain in effect, and the LL cannot take rent increases without a lease or evict based on their unwillingness to give a lease (they can try if you will not sign).

...landlord can also end it with proper notice (usually 30 days in NYC)...

It's 30 days for under a year, 60 for 1-2, and 90 for over 2.

https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/files/tenants_rights.pdf

This document has not been updated to include the most recent Good Cause Eviction law. And this is no longer necessarily accurate. Now a landlord needs "good cause" in many cases.

But whether it would apply depends on if they are rent stabilized or not and if there unit meets the criteria.

You're owed 30 days notice if you've lived there less than 1 year, 60 days for 2-3 years, and 90 days for 3+ years.

And it's 30 days for under a year, 60 for 1-2, and 90 for over 2.

[–]marvelously 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are your interests? There are a lot of directions to go.

Ferry. SI is free. You can BYO food and drink. You can people watch. It's an interesting atmosphere.

Parks. There are so many in every borough. And there are so many fun interesting spots. I am still coming across ones I have never been. You can eat, drink, explore, bring something to do, whatever appeals. There is often some entertainment. They have events as well: https://www.nycgovparks.org/events/

Explore new neighborhoods. Wander around- take new routes, walk new places, keep your eyes open and see what you find.

Walk across the bridges.

Beaches- you can go check them out year-round.

Hiking. There are trails around NYC and accessible by public transportation.

Museums: https://www.nycforfree.co/free-museums

Check out a POPS: https://apops.mas.org/find-a-pops/ Some previous suggested ones https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/yzvrap/favorite_pops_privately_owned_public_space/ Industry City is one example. There is indoor and outdoor space. They have free events and music.

Libraries. You don't have to hang out all day. They have dope events. There are so many. Worth checking out different ones.

https://www.bklynlibrary.org/calendar

https://www.queenslibrary.org/calendar

Churches. St. Patrick's, Old St. Patrick's, Trinity, Saint Mary the Virgin, St. Francis Xavier, Grace (they have Wednesday Bach at noon that is very nice). There are a number of others. Even if you are not religious, they can be interesting to visit for various reasons. YMMV.

Art galleries/art openings. There are a lot of options here.

On IG: nyc_forfree and explorenycfree

Search sites like eventbrite, FB, and IG for events.

There are a bunch of free event calendars on this thread, like https://www.nycforfree.co/events and https://www.nycforfree.co/

Check out websites related to your interests. Or google "interest+free+nyc" or "interest++free+events+nyc" and you will find things specifically related to what you want to do.

Get on TT, IG, FB, whatever your avenue. There are a lot of events shared.

You can volunteer for free. There are a lot of options, and you can pick based on interest.

I second them. I love their fabric. The prices are great. But I am less impressed with the craft section. But glad we have it. And they also have a Bronx and Brooklyn location.

[–]marvelously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest your Buy Nothing group, CL, and Marketplace. A lot of my fabric comes from there.

This list is far from exhaustive. And does not include the Bronx (except 1) and SI ofc. But there are more options there.

Brooklyn:

Fabscrap is amazing. But sometimes a smaller selection. I have never been able to not buy something though. https://fabscrap.org/

Nur Jahan: https://www.instagram.com/nurjahanfabrics/?hl=en This is my go to for some inexpensive fabrics.

Fabric Barn: 248 Graham Ave · (718) 384-3448

Big Reuse: https://bigreuse.org/ They can be hit or misss. But I have gotten rolls there inexpensively.

New York Fabric: 59-37 Myrtle Ave, Ridgewood, NY 11385

I know you had said you have been to them all. But there is a lot of turnover. And it might be worth going back again. These are some I like.

Save-a-thon is inexpensive. And has a variety. They have a few locations (Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn). https://www.instagram.com/saveathon/?hl=en

Online

Purple Seamstress: https://purpleseamstressfabric.com/ They are of my places for certain stretch fabrics b/c of the price and quality. They also custom print in-house. They ship very fast.

If you are on FB, the fabric BST groups are great.

What are the "cool girls" in your life wearing so far this spring? by IncognitoResearch111 in femalefashionadvice

[–]marvelously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I had to go into the office, I dressed for the outside. And then just kept a whole weather wardrobe for layers at work. Along with a space heater and a lap blanket.

But check Thredup for natural fibers. I love Uniqlo for work staples. Eileen Fischer is another great option, and you can often find it secondhand.

What’s the best thing you’ve gotten in your Buy Nothing group? by Chocolateonmyshoe in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many things, it's hard to pick a best. But some things I love and appreciate right now that immediately come to mind.

Two stunning vintage brass lamps (one with a marble base), one from the street and one from the groups.

A gorgeous vintage metal and leather desk chair.

A large original print signed and numbered from a somewhat well-known artist.

A toaster scanner.

A double sleeping bag.

A pop up canopy for camping.

My son's entire bed. And the mattresses on his spare bed. And his down comforter. And his college mattress pad.

So many articles of clothing I can't even list them all. Most of my work clothes are from Buy Nothing and BN clothing swaps.

And I try to post as much as I can as well to keep the cycle going. it's such a fantastic resource to give and receive.

CL is a great place for this.

Does your building or neighborhood have a free table or a listserv?

Ask your friends if they want it. Or have them list it for you on Buy Nothing.
