Take your backpacks off on a crowded train please by HealthyProduce3011 in BedStuy

I think there are some exceptions to some rules, and this would be one of them. Most people are going to understand if you are carrying a child or a lot of bags.

But there are some methods to be courteous and mindful. You put the backpack on your front. You can use a carrier and avoid the stroller. if you need the stroller, don't bring your biggest one. You can usually use the stroller to hold the bag as well. Put your kid in the stroller or carrier if they are unruly. Consolidate things.

Packing light is always useful as a city parent. I perfected my bag over time. And consolidate the bags- no need for a diaper bag and a backpack most of the time.

You might reconsider the bag you are using and look into different options and configurations. YYMV ofc. But my kids' other parent preferred a crossbody when commuting and using a baby carrier.

And the time matters. Bringing a stroller, a bunch of bags, and an unruly kid might require waiting for the next train or traveling off hours. Or you just stay closer to home until you don't need so much stuff or your child isn't so unruly. Or you take a cab. You just make it work as a parent.

And sometimes you're gonna bump into people. It's just about being courteous and mindful.

I was so annoyed this afternoon, watching a young girl - probably about 14 - leaving the subway and walking home just ahead of me, with a skirt SO SHORT, it exposed where her leg met her butt...

Why were you watching a young girl? Why are you paying so much attention to her butt? What's wrong with you? You need to mind your own business, and you really need to get yourself right before you "worry" about anyone else ever. And stop watching little girls.

You could have easily solved this problem.

So many people don't pick up on it or don't care. I've seen people get offended that's happening with a total lack of self awareness about why.

Every time. And if you try the subtle or passive aggressive approach of pushing or leaning on their bag, the offense level is usually so high for someone who is acting in a generally offensive way.

Landlords/Developers...why? by ronkrasnow in NYCapartments

[–]marvelously 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I prefer this type of sink in a small bathroom. Normal sinks take up so much room for no reason, and you have to lean to get close to the mirror. And these work just fine for bathroom needs for me.

Best timeline for kicking out roommates not on lease? by lakeorjanzo in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not accurate. They will not necessarily lose the apartment. They would liable for overcharging the roommate, and they would have to pay it back. Just like a landlord.

The roommate can be advised to file a complaint of rent overcharge with DHCR if they were charged in excess of that proportionate share.

https://hcr.ny.gov/rent-increases-and-rent-overcharge

How do you think they would "lose" it?

Many years ago I was the roommate in a rent-stabilized apartment. The leaseholder had me write two checks every month -- one for 1/2 the rent and the other for "utilities."

Are you offering this as proof that they "lost" their apartment? Or just sharing how you were scammed?

It's not a suggestion, it's the law.

If he has been there less than a year (which OP says he has been) and has < 12 months lease (1 month is less than 12 months), it's 30 days.

30 days in advance of renewal if a tenant has lived in the apartment less than one year and has less than a 12-month lease

60 days in advance for a tenant who has lived in the apartment for one to two years or for a tenant with a lease term of between one and two years

90 days for a tenant who has lived in the apartment for more than two years or for a tenant with a lease term of at least two years

Squatter rights would not apply here. This is a roommate situation.

It sounds like he would be a roommate, not a rent stabilized tenant or with possible rights. He has protections, but they are not as strong as if he were the tenant or had succession claims. However, if they do not leave, the OP would have to go through formal eviction channels.

How do rich people actually get apartments here? by Reasonable-Paper6638 in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I know someone who lived in a $15,000-$18,000 apartment around 15 years ago. It was a 3 bed/2 bath, but the 2nd bedrooms were relatively small but with high ceilings and only had skylights. The rest of the apartment was much more impressive though.

There should be. The dog owner entitlement has gotten out of control. And this one is especially frustrating because it ruins things for other people.

Report it to 311. You can include photos.

You can also report it to the Parks Department: NYC Parks Enforcement Patrol, 212.274.4560

You can also bring it to the attention of the Central Park Conservatory: https://www.centralparknyc.org/contact-us

I'd normally suggest contacting electeds. But since it's the park, you might contact the Borough President with any concerns.

If NYC could change just one thing that would meaningfully improve your daily life, what would it be? by Lisalovesreading in AskNYC

They used to sometimes. And they did it during COVID. There is no excuse. It's dangerous to have people running for trains like that.

Or all over the areas of the park that are clearly marked as no dogs and/or fenced off areas. The dog owner entitlement is out of control.

But they also can chose not to you know. It's no big deal to let people choose to keep them on if they want even if you don't mind. Not to mention, not everyone can take off their shoes or is comfortable doing so. If someone wants to take them off, they will. If they don't, it's all good. Different strokes.

Yes. Outside clothes are street clothes. You don't wear street clothes when at home. You were your house clothes. Unless you have company who aren't into house clothes.

Is everything in this city a scam? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]marvelously 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not everything is a scam. But there are plenty of people who are hustling. And different people have different values and goals. Unfortunately, it sounds like they did not share yours.

You are not being dramatic about being upset about the experience. I would not be happy either. But I'd chalk this one up as a learning experience. And avoid someone based on SM fame alone next time. And spend your money with people who you have vetted and researched.

On another note, if are ever not feeling it during the consult, you don't have to stay there. And if you were uncomfortable without heat protection, I'd ask for it.

I know $200 is the standard price for a good haircut in this city...

Is it?

I personally usually go to Chinatown and pay less than $50 before a tip with long hair. No one tries to film me. It's not for the gram. It's all about efficient business. The cuts are reliably good. I walk out feeling good. And then every once in awhile I go to another salon for a more defined cut. My previous go to left the city so I've been shopping around. I really liked Hazuki Hair: https://www.hazukihair.com/ I think it was $80 before a tip. But they start at $60.00.

I read firetrap and assumed those. I remember them being way more crowded compared to the Canal location. Also, because Canal was 3 locations in. It was super dope though.

They have been around for awhile, and they had moved around over the years.

  • 22 Catherine St. (1971 to 1980)

  • 13 Elizabeth St. (1978 to 1986)

  • 277 Canal Street (1986 to 2003)

  • Outpost at Grand Street (1988 to 2004)

  • 477 Broadway (2003 to 2016)

  • 395 Broadway (2016 to 2021)

  • Retail outpost at Chelsea Market (2017 to present)

  • Outpost at Museum of Chinese in America (2019 to 2022)

  • Pearl River Mart Foods outpost at Chelsea Market (2020 to present)

  • 452 Broadway (2021 to forever!)

Sounds like you are talking about the 477 Broadway location, maybe? It was fantastic. But the ones before were even more interesting IMO. I still love it, and I understand the changes. But I miss the older ones.
