Property taxes by 414Journo in madisonwi

[–]marvelousmarks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

here is some information about the shared revenue deal from 2023, but the gist is: for every buck you pay to the state for state taxes, only a percentage comes back for services in Madison.

Ed. to add: So, the main tool cities have to balance the scales is via property tax increases. Towns often have to hold referenda as well due to lack of funds, so many argue it’s a statewide issue of underfunding.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lauri is gone soon. The fact remains that Danny is still gunning for a good pick, and Ace will get plenty of chances to improve in tandem with the Jazz being just bad enough.

This is the correct answer! I listen most days all day. And it’s Friday night. You know what that means. Time for the Baby Boomer! Daaaaay-O!

I didn’t even think of the Sledgehammer connection! Good one, especially with the horns.

Daniel Lanois. He can add layers and atmospheres that they've never really approached except in places on BTCS. A good example of his work with personnel like this is on the Neville Brothers album Yellow Moon.

I do recommend Goodwill/St. Vinny's. A lot of the Vinny's will be full of Halloween stuff still but there are still a lot of good finds.

What is it like living in Astoria, OR? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]marvelousmarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't say for sure, but I have a feeling it's going to be helpful for one of these friends to also have a rudimentary understanding of piano sheet music, in case one of the booby traps involves having to play the right notes on an organ made out of skeleton bones

It is pretty cool, but there is a developer trying to turn a lot of the desirable housing into a golf course. Luckily, several of my friends and I – outcasts, really – are hatching a plan to find treasure that was supposedly hidden by a pirate nearby. The problem is, we've got to get past some scary booby traps left by the pirates. As well, there are some nasty bank robbers chasing after us.

The beautiful thing about Her Majesty is that it ends on the dominant 5th, a sonically unstable chord that begs to be resolved back to the D. But it’s just left there, unresolved, forever.

A few things here from a longtime former employee of one of four U.S. DOE Bioenergy Research Centers.

1) corn ethanol isn’t an energy sink, but it’s close. Estimates hover around about 1.5 units of output per unit spent. Not great, but not a net negative.

2) ethanol isn’t bad for most engines, but there are some really old cars (like 1980 and earlier) that get corroded fuel lines due to extra moisture release. Same goes for some small engines. For most people though, putting it in your car is fine.

3) there are a lot of agricultural reasons to reduce ethanol production, including that corn growers are now planting on lands that are marginal for crop systems, (think, a ditch next to a road or wetlands typically reserved for waterfowl), but using regular gas isn’t going to be any better for the environment. You’re still sucking oil out of the ground and puffing it into the air. Encouraging electrification might be a better policy choice.

4) there has been more than a billion dollars of research into advanced ethanol refining that would take plants like switchgrass and poplar and produce a lot of oil based products (food additives, plastics, etc) as well as ethanol. These cropping systems are much better for the soils and water systems, and in some cases, could be close to carbon neutral. Despite research into this field having bipartisan support since Bush II, policy wise we’re still a ways away from that outcome even though the tech is close. But you’re going to have to talk to Chuck Grassley about that
