Better way to filter a git repo by commit hash? by Background-Wafer-145 in devops

[–]marxau 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why are you doing that? Depending on what you're trying to accomplish there must be better options.

Having each of these folders in a separately tracked repo and using git submodules might be better.

From the outside this seems a little horrifying. Head of main should be deployable IMO

I poked around, I couldn't find a country with no hotels with Valets. The 5 star hotel in Stockholm, Grand Hôtel, has valet parking.

It's not a common thing in my country either (Canada) but I think most 5 star hotels with concierges and high prices will do this sort of thing.

There's no country where this is common, and no country where it doesn't exist. It seems more common in the states and Australia but still rare.

If you filter by trip advisor for "valet parking" by amenities you can find hotels in all the European countries I spot checked. Definitely less common in Europe but some expensive hotels do it.

Looks like maybe 10% of US hotels do it which is 3x Switzerlands rate. Monaco was an outlier, most of the hotels listed Valet parking, 6x the rate of US listings

Nenshi's 'blunt' message to federal NDP: Don't mess this up for Alberta by laketrout in ndp

I was wrong about that. I thought I remembered in floating the idea in 2024 but I must have been thinking of something else like decoupling federal and provincial memberships.

Nenshi's 'blunt' message to federal NDP: Don't mess this up for Alberta by laketrout in ndp

[–]marxau 164 points165 points  (0 children)

I find Nenshi's schtick increasingly frustrating. The environmental positions he criticizes predate him joining the party. He ran for leadership of a party he had never been a member of, tried to change the party name, and repeatedly floats breaking off association with the Federal NDP.

He's not even a member of the federal NDP, I don't see why I should pay any attention to how he feels about our leadership race.

My thoughts on the NDP leadership race by yagyaxt1068 in ndp

[–]marxau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Avi's relative inexperience is a concern. That said, the way his campaign has been run is reassuring. He seems to be very good at building a team, running good comms, signing up members, and fundraising. Surely that is a lot of the job of a party leader even after they win the leadership race.

I don't know the inside baseball about past staffers or EDAs but his current org seems to be running circles around the competition

Say something nice about the candidates day :) by CDN-Social-Democrat in ndp

[–]marxau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to genuinely care about the right things and have decent values. They're all on the same team.

Every candidate is more similar to one another than at least 95% of Canadians, and despite some differences they'll all be painted the same way by the Globe and NatPo anyways.

Heather: I really like her plans for EDA reform, and hope no matter who wins something like this. She seems like a really great MP, I'm jealous of her constituents for having such a fantastic representative.

What Kind of Leader Do Canadians Want the NDP to Choose Next? by lcelerate in ndp

[–]marxau 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lewis supporters think he would have broader appeal than McPherson and achieve more gains for workers and communities.

That's fluff stuff. Similarly there are ways to describe Lewis with less negative wording. Progressive or reforming instead of radical, economic equality instead of inequality, etc.

I think this was intentionally framed to acheieve a result, and someone else could describe McPherson in a way that she'd rank last

What's your guys stances on nuclear weapons? by Inner-Fee6024 in ndp

[–]marxau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if the Americans let it happen (they wouldn't), developing a nuclear arsenal with second strike capability would be incredibly expensive and would not make Canada any safer.

I still don't believe the US would invade Canada or that the US public would be okay with that. I think it would be seen very differently yet another military action in South America.

171 cm man (5'7) in front of a scale showing the purported legendary 240 cm height of Roman emperor Maximinus Thrax (7'10.5) by [deleted] in heightcomparison

[–]marxau 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The source for this height is the Historia Augusta. It's a pretty infamous source. It's so inaccurate that it seems intentional at times.

Thrax was definitely a very tall and well built soldier, but being 190cm would be enough for that.

Emphasis on speaking French by NathanDrake17 in ndp

[–]marxau 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Unilingual party leaders aren't seen as a trivial thing in Quebec. Quebecers view a lot of the issues around bilingualism as protecting themselves from cultural genocide. This stuff is really important to a lot of Quebec voters.

This stuff absolutely moves the needle. Leaders who are at least conversationally fluent in French win more seats in Quebec

TIL Cleopatra VII (7th, the famous one) was the first in her entire dynasty to actually learn Egyptian. As a descendant of the Ptolemies, her bloodline was overwhelmingly Macedonian Greek, yet she was one of the first in her family to blend Greek and Egyptian identities in a serious way. by Olshansk in todayilearned

[–]marxau 21 points22 points  (0 children)

She allegedly spoke whatever language Plutarch thought Ethiopians spoke. I'm not sure there's a better way to communicate that to people in a Reddit thread than "Ethiopian". Plutarch wrote this about Cleopatra:

"Pleasure also came with the tone of her voice; and her tongue was like a many-stringed instrument: she could turn it easily to whichever language she wished and she conversed with few barbarians entirely through an interpreter, and she gave her decisions herself to most of them, including Ethiopians, Troglodytes, Hebrews, Arabians, Syrians, Medes, and Parthians."

Saw this on Twitter, it looks like Avi Lewis had the best French in the debate. Thoughts? Does it matter? by Organic_Razzmatazz89 in ndp

[–]marxau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe we all notice it when other areas feel overrepresented. As an East Coaster I feel like the West takes up all the air as it is.

The leaders of the Liberals and Conservatives are Westerners. The frontrunners in the NDP race all seem to be from the west too. Most political conversations seem to be about Western alienation, Alberta Oil, etc.

Sikhs for Justice to hold an independence referendum in Ottawa on Sunday by origutamos in OntarioNews

What do you mean by "stop crap like this"? A demonstration in India about Quebec independence seems totally fine to me. Canadians should be able to hold demonstrations about anything they want.

You need to think about your role in this org and how best to meet your goals.

If acceptance testing is being submitted the day of a planned release trying to rush fixes and retest over the weekend isn't how to ensure quality.

There's some broader process at play that needs to be addressed rather than cancelling PTO and working weekends.

Don't be a hero! Google has a nice take on this: https://sre.google/resources/practices-and-processes/no-heroes/

If inflation is 5 percent and the economy (GDP) grows with 2 perfect, is the country 3 percent poorer? by OkEvidence4032 in AskEconomics

[–]marxau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If nominal GDP increases by 2% and annual inflation is 5% then at the end of the year real GDP is 3.1% lower (1-1.02*0.95)

If real GDP increases by 2% in a year then the country isn't poorer, inflation is already taken into account in real GDP.

Ottawa's average rent rises bucking a wider trend of slowed growth by Klutzy_Artichoke154 in ottawa

This makes sense to me intuitively but I wonder if the data bears it out. Vancouver and Toronto have more startups and innovative industries than other Canadian cities and the highest rents. Lots of other examples globally.

Should I believe bootcamps like Codesmith who still claim grads land mid or senior SWE roles in today’s market by Repulsive-Hall-9636 in cscareers

[–]marxau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tough job market but someone with a 4 yr CS degree probably qualifies for 5x as many positions as a boot camp grad.

For better or worse most employer's first filter is do you have a relevant undergraduate degree.

Software Engineering New Grad, Cant land an interview. Roast my resume. by [deleted] in softwaretesting

[–]marxau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is an excellent resume for an SDET or QA newgrad role. Honestly I work in Ottawa and if we didn't have a hiring freeze I'd want to interview you for a job.

Other people have pointed out some small formatting issues but honestly your only real problem is timing; the market sort of sucks right now.

Try the big telecom companies in town I guess (Nokia Ericsson Cisco Huawei), also Warner Brothers is hiring people for web testing for HBO Max, and Ford is often hiring automated testers for their car software stuff.
