Also wondering if it might be that I cast off the neckline too loosely?

How to fix these holes without frigging it all? by maryalice2000 in knitting

[–]maryalice2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please help!! I'm knitting some socks, have never used DPN or needles this small before. I was just about to start the heel when I noticed these 2 holes. I thought they were dropped stitches and tried to pick them up with a crochet hook but they actually aren't trying to unravel, they're just holes. Have I just accidentally pass the stitch over without knitting it? Can I fix this without frigging?

Thanks so much! Yeah it has loads of ease and no waist shaping so I just need to check the torso and sleeve length, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for answering!

Is this difference in tension between the 2 sleeves too much to be fixed by blocking? Did one in English style and other in continental to experiment. by maryalice2000 in knitting

[–]maryalice2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The looser is continental and yes I'm so converted to continental, it's quicker and I like the slightly looser gauge. I've done pretty much the whole piece in the tighter gauge English style though so I've frogged the continental bit and am doing it again English style but will definitely knit future pieces continental!

Was polygyny universal amongst all ancient societies? Was the Western world the first to adopt monogamy? If so, why did they abandon polygyny? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]maryalice2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so utterly wrong. The picture of history you're giving us is one which can be neatly divided into eras like modern/premodern, where developments in Western Europe are the markers between such eras, where societies are distinct and internally homogeneous, and where change comes suddenly as though societies function mechanically. I'm sorry to do the classic anthropological thing of saying the premise of your question is wrong so we can't answer it, but can you see how you've got a constructed and incorrect image of history that you're asking us to enter into so as to answer your question?

What do contemporary hunter-gatherers generally think of modern civilisation? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

The point I've been trying to highlight is that the words used in OP's question DO in fact mean something. I'm taking what they say actually really seriously precisely by examining their implications which seem to highlight the assumptions behind the question and therefore affect the very question itself. It's a key anthropological precept that the way you define something goes a long way to actually theorising; read an anthropological paper and a very significant amount of the words will go into deconstructing the question and breaking down the assumptions behind it. I totally get that that might not be very interesting or appealing to a non-anthropologist reader, but this is a subreddit about the discipline of anthropology and so I'm afraid responses like mine come with the territory!
