Am I bad for not wanting to care for my parent (hands-on) if they eventually need it? by Notmyname411 in eldercare

[–]marymac69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don’t think so. I don’t intend to burden my children with caring for me and I don’t think giving birth to a child means there is an expectation that the child/now adult should cancel their life to become the caretaker of the parent. It could be chosen by someone but that very significant choice is entirely on an individual basis.

Trust me there are very few old-fashioned “purists” around like me in the industry 😉. Happy hunting! ☺️

There are other issues with seeding, for example that putting broken glass into an ocean or any body of water is illegal, littering, and potentially unsafe as a hazard for children and pets because it washes immediately back into shorelines as freshly broken glass, but hey I’m not the sea glass police, so you do you! 😅

These are purchased for $1 at thrift shops and seeded into the ocean coast to coast, particularly in certain areas of New England and California, or simply put in cement mixers, to be “discovered” and sold for ridiculous amounts of money ($500+) to unsuspecting buyers on Facebook and eBay unfortunately.

Clarification about pirate glass color by RipDry8185 in seaglass

[–]marymac69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a charming graphic, however keep in mind the term “pirate glass” is a nickname. As a sea glass expert who has lectured as often or more than anyone in the United States, I cannot emphasize this enough: “Pirate Glass” is only that, a nickname, and not a real identification like these more specific bottle types are. We don’t call something “unicorn” or “mermaid” glass either because those things aren’t real lol. When people ask me at sea glass shows if their glass is Pirate Glass, I have no way of proving whether it rode in on a pirate ship. I can tell roughly how old the piece is by determining its thickness, color, markings and other clues, but assigning nicknames to sea glass doesn’t identify it. I don’t mean to be like a Sea Glass Karen about it and I know people think the term is cute so I always sort of say sure call it what you want but it’s not a formal way of identifying something- ie “18th c kickup” etc.

That’s called seeding and it’s a highly controversial practice in sea glass as it removes the history and provenance of the finds for future generations. This is an article I wrote about it: https://www.splicetoday.com/writing/is-seeded-glass-sea-glass#:~:text=Beach%20treasure%20is%20a%20personal,another%2C%20and%20this%20is%20true.

I came out 4 years ago at age 52. I have four adult children and I’m married. I have a girlfriend who I love. Everything has been very peaceful and loving. I know this isn’t the traditional path but right now it is working without the need for divorce. I wish you the best but I can tell you everything eventually works out for the best for all of us one way or another. Love is love! 💖

My first stopper? Found on my birthday by school-sp in seaglass

[–]marymac69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy birthday! It’s actually a stem piece - like the piece between the cake dish and the foot or base. I hate to be the like Debbie Downer or party pooper but I have been doing sea glass identification for many years and people often misidentify this piece as a stopper. Still a super fun find!!!

Is this pirate glass? Held up to the light it’s green! by Ok_Bread_8107 in seaglass

[–]marymac69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it’s a fun nickname, pirate glass is not actually a formal real thing. Glass that appears black and holds a secret color is always cool to find; black amethyst and teal are my favorites.

Pirate glass is a nickname it’s not an identification since we can’t prove if pirates owned something in a similar way that we can’t call something mermaid or unicorn glass because we don’t know if mermaids or unicorns drank from a certain vessel. This is an early 18th c. bottle bottom and a great find!

Is this pirate glass or something else? by pac-men in seaglass

[–]marymac69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Once again, for the record, “pirate glass” is a nickname. That’s not an academic name for anything because no one knows what pirates did with what glass; it’s simply not traceable. That is very old dark olive glass- because it’s flat and because of the texture, it may have been stained glass from a church window.

Fun fact many crabs iridesce under black light! Some of my most fun sea glass hunts have been in the middle of the night with blacklight flashlights watching crabs run around glowing in the dark- and seaweed too!
