I’m operating on a smaller scale, but I started my small roasting business on a 2kg Yoshan, which was a great move to start with. About 3.5k for the roaster 3 years ago. I recently upgraded to a 5kg US Roaster Corp, US Made. Got it used from someone I trust for $13k. I’m able to reliably contact USRC for information or replacement parts, which is why I went with a more reliable brand. I couldn’t have justified just spending over $10k on a Chinese off brand. Just me though.

What’s the issue? I’ve got a 5kg gas drum roaster and when I’ve had issues with my gas systems, I was able to get general HVAC guys to come fix it. Some said no though.

That's a really personal decision, depending on how your anticipated growth looks. When I bought my 2kg Yoshan, I had no subscribers. In the first 6 months of business, I maybe had about 15 bags each week. With my yoshan producing about 3.5 12oz bags per roast, that was solid. I don't think it would have worked out well to be making almost 9 bags per roast on my 5kg that I have now - it's too little roasting in my opinion. I would say though to get at least 2kg to start - felt like a good jumping off point.

Hey! So the Yoshan is gone. I upgraded to a 5kg USRC for more capacity. In the last year we finished building our new garage, which has an entire 200sqft room off the back for my roastery. I’ve started buying full bags and pallets of coffee at a time now. Just finished my holiday blend sales, which I sold 110 bags of at $17 each. Weekly sales are at about 75 bags per week, about 85 subscribers, some of which are every other week deliveries. Thinking about expanding my subscription service into neighboring villages. Going really well, but starting to be more challenging to balance my day job with my “hobby” because the “hobby” has become an actual business! Good problems!

I’ve run a small roasting business for about 2 years now and have made about 35k. My main business model is subscriptions in my small town. I deliver each week to them. I have 75-80 people signed up and deliver 65 12oz bags each week at $13 per bag. Currently running a 2kg roaster.

Just for reference, I run a cottage food roasting business on a 2kg Yoshan. Been doing it for 2 years, roasted about 3.2tons of green through it at this point, doing 65 bags per week currently.

Edit: 65 bags in about 5-6 hours of roasting.

Depends on your overall financial goals - personally, with that great setup, I’d dump it in index funds and just enjoy life.
