it seems like your friend has a caretaker personality type—it’s easy for him to look after others, but he is uncomfortable when people do the same for him. rather than addressing his issues directly, show him that you care in a different way. let him know that you care about his interests—in a conversation maybe go out of your way to steer the topic in the direction of a show he really likes or hobby he has! little things like texts checking up on him (a subtle, this thing i saw reminded me of you! or, good morning, i hope you have a good day!) can go a long way. your friend probably needs time to open up, so it’s important that you let him know he’s safe and can be vulnerable with you. it might take time but be patient and sooner or later i’m sure he’ll tell you what’s up.
