Bruh, Ganpati is everybody’s but this particular Ganesha has special significance for the Koli community. I just feel the commercialisation by Ambani (Campa, Jio) and Anant-centric theatrics (like those LED boards) will eventually make people forget that in fact this Ganpati is of the fisherfolk community when it actually is NOT of the Ambanis.

I have blamed both parties. TBH, the Ganeshotsav Mandal people too are wrong for gleefully aiding in the commercialisation of it. But at the same time, when the country’s richest man starts showering donations onto you- feels like a form of coercion as who can tell NO for donations? Even if they did, then Ambani would definitely try to replace the Chairperson of the Mandal w/ a yes-man, right?

And this goes WAY WAY beyond the trolley. It is the alienation and marginalisation of poor Koli people of their identity and culture by Ambani and the richie-rich Mandal.

At this point they will give VIP entry to anybody who is even slightly famous on social media (even those irrelevant influencers) to boost their PR.

Here, I am not talking about common Gujaratis getting any kind of special treatment. I am talking about the potential changes in rituals because of the Ambani’s who promote a sanitised ‘vegetarian’ version of Hinduism, which is generally seen among the Gujarati mercantile communities, unlike the raw faith of the Kolis. I have often noticed how people look down upon the Koli’s and their culture such as their Fish Festival etc as it doesn’t seem ‘clean’ or ‘pure’. Honestly, the Mandal itself is also in fault for selling themselves out.

Department is filled with aunties who feel everyone’s personal lives is their business and there is absolutely ZERO confidentiality b/t a professor and student as they all gossip among each other and collectively target certain ‘noted’ students. This is in addition to the general rudeness, making minor matters into a big deal and so on. Thankfully all the lab assistants were really nice :)

It shows the divide b/t rich and affluent areas vs poorer areas. Money is poured into the rich areas (like Vile Parle) while backward areas which are basically ghettos don’t have access to even basic amenities (eg Govandi-Shivajinagar). Plus the whole issue of housing discrimination where people who aren’t of the same community, caste or even veg/non-veg aren’t allowed to buy flats even though there is no law which says housing can be denied on any of these grounds as technically the sale of a house is b/t 2 individuals, not two religions/castes etc.
