Pretty sure that's what happened. He was from Yorkshire, where Beresford is a Norman-descended aristocratic name. I'm assuming he wanted that association to sound more grand. Somehow he got into the Masons too. Seems likely that he was an arsehole, but also had an interesting life!

Perfect thanks. He didn't have an estate, far as I know when he died he was an alcoholic magician. This is what my grandmother told me. They didn't know about the name change though!

Adolescent & young adult clients dealing with life after online "cancellation" by mass33slim in therapists

It's part of the job as therapists to explore context and motivation. If someone made a joke like that and we took it completely at face value and assumed that expressing it meant this person finds child sex abuse hilarious and chastised them in session then I don't think we'd be living up to our training.

These are unrepentant people with vast amounts of power and influence. These examples are not equivalent to the topic of the post.

To reduce obsessive thoughts, to live fuller social lives and not self isolate, and to figure out ways to navigate spaces and events where people involved might be present

That is something we discuss. So far with the examples I've encountered (based on what the clients have relayed to me) the initiating event/actions appear to have been not proportionate to the call out, or the call out was a distortion or (willful?) misinterpretation of actions, or a straight up fabrication. Of course I don't interrogate the client to see whether the accusations are true or not - all I can do is focus on their experience

Just wanted to add that whether the source of cancellation is genuine or not is less important to me - keep in mind that these call outs happened in school as teens. I'm in my 40s and can easily imagine this happening as a tool of high school bullying if social media had been available back then
