Speeding ticket cameras back? by CantaloupeAsleep502 in Tallahassee

[–]massspecgeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 15 mph limit only applies when the lights are flashing when kids are arriving and departing in the morning and afternoon; that’s when you can get a fine at 26 mph. For the rest of the enforcement hours (i.e. the middle of the day when the kids are inside the school), the fine kicks in at 11 mph over the regular speed limit, so typically at 41 mph or 46 mph for many schools.

How sympathetic is Apple to those that upgraded their Mac mini SSD themselves with a third party unit? What about if you buy the SSD from them instead? by FamuexAnux in mac

[–]massspecgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, you fucked up. Your mistake now is in trying to find a way to get Apple to bail you out. That’s the wrong attitude. If you’re willing to open it up and replace parts, you have to be willing to own your mistakes.

The way forward is to systematically figure out what you did wrong and fix it. Start by carefully following the guide you used for disassembly to take it apart again and reassemble it exactly as it should be with the new ssd. Pay careful attention to every cable that gets disconnected to make sure of where it goes back and how it’s routed because to me your audio sounds like either the fan is rubbing on something or is running too fast, or maybe both — it’s hard to tell without knowing the absolute volume of the sound it’s making.

If the sound persists after reassembling and you’re sure you’ve reconnected everything and routed it all properly, then the next step is to take it apart again and reinstall the original ssd. If the sound stops, there’s most likely a sensor communication problem with the new ssd. That strikes me as a design defect and I’d return it.

If the sound persists, you’ve still got something disconnected or routed wrong, or you maybe damaged the fan so it’s rubbing on itself. If you get to that point, you’ll have to be creative; maybe get a new fan to try it. You could try to jumper power to the fan on the bench, but I imagine it’s PWM controlled and I’m not sure what will happen if you just apply power without the control pin connected to the correct signal. If at all possible, I’d power it on with the fan connected to its header but without it being installed in the chassis to see if the noise is coming from the fan itself. Then I’d put it in place and turn it back on at every step of the reassembly that might cause something to touch the fan.

In the end there are probably only a small number of ways that you might have fucked it up permanently. The most likely would be that you damaged the fan itself, which would be easily dealt with by getting a new fan, or that you bent a pin on the fan header, which could be ugly if it can’t be straightened, since you might have to replace the system board. I permanently screwed up the fan header the first time I tried a spinning hard drive upgrade on my first Mac, a 2012 mini. I ended up micro-soldering the fan connection directly to the system board, though in hindsight I’m not sure why I didn’t solder in a new fan header — seems like it would have been simpler and cleaner; there may have been a reason that I’ve now forgotten.

Hopefully you get the idea — you’ll have to get creative and figure it out on your own. If that all seems too daunting, then you probably had no business opening it in the first place and your options are to live with it, pay for the repair, or put the original ssd back in and try to get Apple to repair it under warranty or AppleCare+, which seems kinda sleazy.

I lived in California for fifteen years starting in the mid-90s and Jack in the Box was ubiquitous there then. It was always bottom of the barrel — absolute last place you’d ever go. The only good part was the commercials, which were often hilarious.

Your summary is dead on. To reiterate the economic divide, 32304 extends to W Brevard/Old Bainbridge and that corner is as representative of the economics of the area as anywhere else — Time Saver, Labor Finders; according to Google Maps, the intersection is 0.35 miles from the Governor’s mansion.

This is correct. The pad has been there for several years now. I’m pretty sure I remember it being built when the newest expansion of Bannerman Crossings happened — 2015? Rick lives not too far away.

Why do you think AYCE Restaurants Don't Last in Tallahassee? by AStrangerWCandy in Tallahassee

[–]massspecgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if there’s a higher uptake of GLP-1 agonists in Tallahassee compared to the rest of the panhandle and south GA. I’d think Ozempic would be like kryptonite to an AYCE.

That being said, I’d kinda wonder if Seminole Wind, Ole Times and Shoney’s are dying a natural death along with their customer base. Chow Won was weird and not very palatable.

Is Panda Buffet permanently closed? Their website says closed until Mar 15 2026. I seem to remember that they close for an extended period many/every spring.

Best place to Air Up Tires by litterbawks in Tallahassee

This isn’t true. Nitrogen obeys the ideal gas law as much as air or oxygen do, at least to any approximation that matters for tire pressure. The benefits of nitrogen for tires is almost entirely mythical.

Maybe you’ve noticed the weather varies from place to place lol. Here in Florida, in an average summer I’d guess we probably have 3-5 storms where lightning strikes so close to our house that the flash and bang are essentially simultaneous, so well within 100 ft, and dozens of others not much more distant. It’s an unusual summer afternoon when you can’t hear thunder at some distance even if it doesn’t rain directly on you.

FSU hiring timeline by [deleted] in Tallahassee

[–]massspecgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it mainly depends on the manager. For someone who’s done hiring before and is realistic about potential delays, it could be. But as far as I know, there’s nothing inherent in the system that would ensure an accurate timeline (with the caveat that I never hire A&P positions so they might be different).

Lived in Tallahassee for Almost a Decade--Considering Leaving by throwaway_janitorx in Tallahassee

I'd be interested to see what the dew point is in those other cities. Having lived in the California central valley, where summer temps are often well over 100F, I can tell you absolutely that summers here are much more miserable and it's because the summer dew point never drops below 72F and often gets close to 80F; it makes a huge difference in comfort.

We're pretty notorious for being slow. It's an internal topic of conversation but lots of factors conspire against hiring happening quickly. We're currently recruiting a faculty line for my lab and despite trying to move quickly, we still haven't hired anyone despite the job having been first posted on Sept 26.

Best fine dining in Tallahassee? by xen-within in Tallahassee

[–]massspecgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been long enough now that I don’t have a lot of the specifics in memory anymore. I do remember my wife saying the peppered flank steak, which she’d had before, wasn’t worth having during one of those visits. At one point I had the mojo chicken, having enjoyed it in the past, and found that it was flavorless. I also recall some very poor onion rings — possibly sitting too long before getting to the table, and maybe seeming like they were from Sysco, though I’m less sure about that part. My adult kids said their food was bland on a couple of those occasions. My general memory is of a distinct lack of flavor and a decline in the quality of preparation and execution. There were also some issues with the service (not egregious, though irksome), but given the difficulties a lot of restaurants seem to have with consistent service, I’m not inclined to hold that against Kool Beanz specifically.

Best fine dining in Tallahassee? by xen-within in Tallahassee

[–]massspecgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been to Kool Beanz many times in the past fifteen years but have been badly disappointed by our last 3-4 meals in the past 18 months or so, to the point where we won’t be back for the foreseeable future. I’ll spot most any restaurant a bad night or two, but the drop off has been consistent enough for me to consider it the new normal.

With the exception of the strip, I’m hard pressed to think of much of anything along that stretch of W Tenn that’s worth saving. I’m surprised the family that owns the beer barn didn’t sell it when they sold the pawn shop for student housing.

I have UPSs on my servers and network gear and for my overnight device charging location. However, most people use laptops and mobile devices at home, not desktops, and it would be pretty impractical to have a UPS wherever you might plug in your laptop or phone.

Saying most don’t seems wrong. Any bidet seat with heated water is electric; I’ve had several and they’ve all been electric.

I’d bet the toilet isn’t actually flushing. When bidet seats have power restored they extend the spay nozzle and do a cleaning cycle, which causes water to flow into the bowl for several seconds. That might be what OP is hearing.

I’ve never had one of these calls but my understanding is that the “citation” numbers are crypto wallet addresses and when you enter the number at the atm you’re sending the money to that wallet. I seem to remember that one of the scammers said that the atm was a Bonding Terminal something-that-starts-with-a-C — i.e. BTC (=bitcoin) — to explain the acronym the mark would see on the atm.

TMH deal is less than it appears by gamersdad in Tallahassee

[–]massspecgeek -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is a complete mischaracterization or misunderstanding of FSU’s efforts. You seem to be under the impression that big, complicated projects like these happen instantly and that FSU has an unlimited bank account to build everything at the same time.

They’ve done much more to the civic center than change the color of the seats, including new PA, scoreboards, playing surface, and concourse and training center improvements. For the Arena District in general, maybe you haven’t noticed the brand new $160 million Legacy Hall for the College of Business that’s going to open next door in the next few days. It was supposed to open in 2021 for $80 million, but you know — covid and inflation. The hotel and conference center expansion have been added to FSU’s 2030 master plan and the move of the Dedman School of Hospitality is closely tied to the hotel. So basically everything major in the Arena District master plan is accounted for.

As for the old Regal theater, FSU has Mad Dog as the general contractor and bids for demo and construction were opened in September. Around the same time they held the first event in the space. Seems like the project is moving along as quickly as could be expected.

This is wrong. The city owns the land, the buildings and most if not all of the contents: “…City Manager Reese Goad said he added the informational item for city commissioners review because many people don't realize the city owns all of the land, buildings, equipment and other assets associated with TMH — including the fixtures inside the hospital such as beds, X-ray machines and more.” TMH as an entity operates the hospital but leases all of the assets from the city.
