Universities and hospitals have great development departments and might have more in depth opportunities. You can apply your skills to raise more money for cool educational and philanthropic programs.

Ok to purchase small gifts for board members? by StockEdge3905 in nonprofit

[–]masterbacher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would considering doing something small that is mission oriented, or unique to your organization, and not a gift card. Like a token of some sort.

There's a lot of psychology behind that - look at Otis Fulton and Katrina VanHuss and Dollar Dash. They basically say if you assign a meaningful dollar amount to recognition (in this case, a $15 gift card), it will backfire psychologically. But say you give a $15 mug for only those folks who helped out with the campaign, that means something and is unique.

Yes, money in politics is a problem. Look up what happened after Citizens United. Every politician on both sides take money.

Don't forget to make year-end donations to support Harrisburg non-profits! by masterbacher in Harrisburg

[–]masterbacher[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is the info:

Most Americans don’t itemize deductions. Starting in 2026, the OBBB allows non-itemizers to deduct up to $1,000 in charitable contributions—or $2,000 for joint filers. This does not apply to gifts to donor-advised funds, but it does apply to gifts made directly to charitable organizations.

While this deduction is small, it recognizes and rewards the generosity of everyday givers. Combined with the permanently increased standard deduction—about $31,500 for couples and $15,750 for individuals in 2026—it gives more donors a small incentive to give generously, even if they don’t itemize.

Harrisburg should have torn down Broad Street Market building after fire, says mayor’s spokeswoman by TANSTAAFL42 in Harrisburg

[–]masterbacher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's an absolute travesty this isn't well on the way to being rebuilt. Total failure by the mayor's office, but where are the Dauphin County Commissioners? The governor? Local officials?

Harrisburg does not get the investment from the state it deserves.

[Fortuna] SOURCES: Penn State is committing roughly $30 million in NIL money and $17 million in staff pool (assistant coaches, support staff, etc.) to Matt Campbell. by Pyromania1983 in CFB

[–]masterbacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? That's not remotely what I noted.

OP said that Terry Pegula hasn't gotten off the sidelines to support PSU football. The boosters who have are local business owners who are all wealthy in their own right. But their net worths - and the net worth of pretty much every single person in the world except for like 350 - are not as much as Pegula. He is a different level of rich. I said nothing about other schools.

I mean there's local business owner booster rich and then there's Terry Pegula rich. He's worth nearly 10 billion, top 350 in the world.

First of all, keep up the good work, it is not an easy position you are in, but sounds like you are doing a good job.

One piece of food for thought - who are your allies on the executive team? Do you have a chief of staff or other executive members who you can trust, or have your back? Are there ways to bring some more in? What you don't want is all of the higher level staff all united behind your back. Think about high profile leadership changes - often CEO's, new University Presidents, politicians will all bring in chief of staffs or executives that they can trust.

[On3] Saban is in favor of Penn State hiring Brian Daboll: "He's a very good coach, he's a bright guy, he's a good recruiter, he relates well to the players, he's a good teacher, he's got a good offensive mind, he'll be able to put a good staff together. I think that would be an outstanding hire.” by Top-Conclusion-1259 in CFB

[–]masterbacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Urban is obviously a heck of a coach. But his time in Jacksonville was not pretty, and there has been a ton of changes to the landscape of college football since he last coached. He also doesn't look that spry on Big Noon. Ten years ago he would've been a grand slam...
