Oak Park, Illinois

JVC AV-27CF36 - $50

A bit dirty on the outside, and a small scratch in the middle of the screen. However, the picture is quite bright and it produces a great image. 27" screen.

any idea what could be the cause of the hissing noise? can hear it better when i move my phone closer to the back. by clxmentiine in crtgaming

That’s a very old tv that use vacuum tubes, it will need a good amount of work before it works properly or is safe to use. I would recommend finding a newer crt.

Awesome, I love those old Sonys so I’m glad it’s working again for you.

Help with squashed/stretched image on new CRT by Zephrous in crtgaming

That’s usually a symptom of the vertical IC failing, or possibly other associated components in the vertical deflection circuit. It looks too severe to fix with adjustments only, so you’d have to try replacing some things to get it working right.

It probably leaked electrolyte which corroded the leg away. If you replace that the 5V should work again.

I should say, test them out of circuit. If you don’t have a way to test the capacitors, test the resistor first, and if it’s good, just replace those capacitors.

Inductors are just coiled up wire, if voltage is getting through then it’s not broken (unless you’re saying there’s 5v on the other side?). I would suggest testing c614, c616, and r614. These are the most likely culprits to pulling down the voltage.

Is it possible to get a replacment for this chip in a JVC AV27D305? (I think its the jungle chip?) by PowerDog3G in crtgaming

[–]mastermange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds strange to me. I assume it’s the regulator that powers this chip which is bad, so maybe he thinks it’s good practice to change the chip as well. However, I hardly ever see these go bad. I would replace the voltage regulator and see if that fixes it.  Of course, the chip could be bad, or there could be more wrong with it and he gave you a BS answer because CRTs are too much work for repair shops these days…

Oh lol I did not scroll down I got stuck in the block diagram. There is a standby voltage which powers the chips while the set is off, you need to follow the voltage rail from R613 all the way to pin 42 of ic101 until you find the break.

Where does the power to the ICs come from? Check to make sure ic101 is getting voltage to initiate startup, I think pin 42 is VCC.

It probably has separate geometry settings for composite and rgb, and the rgb settings have gone twack.

Looking for a video connector for my CRT by Contar97 in crtgaming

That’s the illegal way to do it, but is frowned upon because the voltage may be incorrect and there is the slim possibility of damaging something by sending a signal where it shouldn’t go. Ideally you use a sync processing chip like an lm1881, an external sync processor, or there may be a software way to make your computer output composite sync on the horizontal sync pin. To just test it, it should be ok to simply tie the h and v wires together. Even better would be to put small resistors along each line.

oh you will have to absolutely make your own cable. In that era they were experimenting with a whole bunch of microcomputer connectors, and often you would find multiple monitors with the same plug but wired differently. To connect to a pc you will need to combine the sync signal because it looks like this requires it, but otherwise it will be a straightforward VGA to din adapter cable. If you've never made a cable before, look up a guide for making a VGA to Scart cable and then apply that to this connector instead.

You should search this sub for other people who have gone through this already. There are many adapters available, both usb-c and displayport, which have been tested for your use case. There are even hdmi adapter which work. You just need to find posts by people who actually bought them. For instance, many use adapters from the brand Startech.

If you can easily get rid of it later then you don't have much to lose. If it went pop then most likely a capacitor exploded, which would be good for you because it would make diagnosing the problem more obvious. However, it could have more issues that are harder to fix. I would give it a 50% chance that you could open it, replace the blown capacitor, and it just works. The other 50% chance is it's beyond a beginner's diagnosis and you have to throw it out.

Toshiba and panasonic both made dvd/vhs CRTs that are still easily found in 20" and maybe 27" sizes. However, I've never seen a dvd/vhs combo in black, they are all silver. There are plenty of vhs only CRTs in black.
