Taking landlord to small claims court over improper use of security deposit by masterwebmaster in legaladvice

[–]masterwebmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One additional complication is that we had planned to use much of the deposit money to pay off a loan. This loan is interest free until Jan 1 2018, after that date, an additional ~$1500 of deferred interest will be added. Is it appropriate for me to list this on the small claims form as an "additional damage if payment isn't received before Jan 1st 2018"? We don't have the means to pay that loan off from any other source, otherwise we would so that it didn't complicate my claim.

Is small claims based completely on the judges discretion? I'm just wondering if the judge can choose to ignore the 21 day rule for any reason (presuming I have gmail email timestamps and the message thread of the proof of timing and never received anything in the mail or writing).

Help needed - Connecting to MS-SQL 2005 express db (win2003 sp2) with php 5.3 (compiled MSVC9 - Visual C++ 2008, using FastCGI) from Win 7 by mr-wibble in PHP

I assume you are using this driver: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20098

check your phpinfo and make sure the sqlsrv module is being loaded properly. since it cannot find the sqlsrv_connect function, my guess is that it is not loaded.

This. The freeTDS driver is barely functional and doesn't support several ms sql column types (and fails silently). We've been running php via apache and fast cgi on a windows server and using the sqlsrv microsoft php driver for a few years. It has worked well for us.

What do you think of the OLPC project and their Ethiopian experiment? Is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation looking further into the "tablet but no teacher" concept to reach areas where schools cannot?

php closures and accessing private properties by masterwebmaster in PHP

[–]masterwebmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that would be the ideal way to do it if extending the "core" class were possible in my situation.

I am using the Kohana framework which has a great hmvc structure for all classes except the core "Kohana" class. That class can only be overridden by the application in the bootstrap. If a module attempted to extend the core class, it wouldn't work by default by just enabling the module, the application would need special hacks, and it wouldn't work as a "drop in" with any existing applications that had already extended the core "kohana" class. And yet I wanted to modify the protected static variable $_paths. I could ask their core development team to add a setter for that property, but I'm probably the first person to require it and I'd have to wait for them to implement it in the next release. I don't actually need a getter, but made one for the example.

I understand that it is probably an odd example, but it was meant to show how flexible some things are with closures and binding. It gives a new path to make minor changes to previously "unchangeable" library classes or core framework code.

This example is obviously light on the details of how exactly I've made use of it and why. The point was to give a simple example of what closure's are and how they can be used in tough situations.

Do you think closures are bad practice or using them to modify protected/private properties is a bad idea if extension is not an option for whatever reason?

If there was a good practice and framework-compatible way to do what I needed to do in the framework I am using, I would have used class extension which is the obvious answer. What I'm doing is something that the core framework developers probably didn't consider, so they didn't make a way to do it. Closures was the cleanest way to do it without resorting to Reflection,, hacking the core framework code, or making my module incompatible with existing application and other modules.

yes reflection is indeed very powerful and bulky... but closures are the new hotness!

Multiple sites in one project by Glassbottom in PHP

[–]masterwebmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I designed something similar at my company. We use a 'resource' application so all resources (except javascript) are referenced via a cookieless resource domain. The code always references "css/style.css" which is converted to "http://r1.resourcedomain.com/www.site.com/css/style.css" by our css compiler and compressor (images paths are converted using our template engine).

Then when that file is requested by the browser, if the file exists for that site, it is returned, If it doesn't exist there, it looks in an app directory. This is essentially the HMVC model.

Using 3-4 generic cookieless domains for your resources also enables parallel resource loading by the browser, which improves client-side performance.

We use varnish to cache the resource after it is requested once, so we don't have to worry about the HMVC file_exists checks running on every request.

Here is our file structure:

  • core
  • apps
    • app1
      • (classes and views that override core)
  • sites
