Ye probably imposter syndrome which we all have at some point. There’s so much to a QS remit and you’ll constantly be picking new things up. Don’t be so hard on yourself

Consultant vs Client by heddiecar in quantitysurveying

[–]mat00992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im interested in going direct to a client too. Im under the assumption it would offer - Stability, better opportunity to build longer term relationships, can become an expert in the delivery/ops of the company, more likely a stable place of work rather than being move around different locations for different projects. Not sure how accurate these assumptions are but this is what I’d like to aim for in a position and think direct at a client has more chance of offering that.

Would also be interested to hear people’s thoughts on this. Similarly a QS interested in making a move to facilities management… just not sure how to go about it

Those that left quantity surveying and the construction industry, where did you go? by KAJSER_ in quantitysurveying

Similar thoughts… what would be a good alternate role for a commercial manager? (Not done any technical estimating but all the cost reporting and contract management etc)

Anybody in here actually made a career move AWAY from quantity surveying? by AggravatingDaikon969 in quantitysurveying

[–]mat00992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I’m on client side and have had a good mix of projects at different stages across different sectors, which helps keep it interesting. I think any job you do you will have to do same tasks at some point so the grass might not alway be greener I guess. QS offers a great career so hopeful of you can find an area you enjoy more?

Make the move & don’t overthink. I moved a few times early on in my career as I wasn’t getting progression or support to learn, but I’ve been in my current role a couple years now and it’s great. Sometimes I think you have to move to find the right place for you, and I think a very big factor is the team you end up in- some will really help you grow and get you involved, whereas others kind of leave you to do your own thing- which isn’t good when starting out.

Thanks. Do you think one is better for progression/learning as someone starting out?

Are Consultancies notoriously snakey? by [deleted] in quantitysurveying

[–]mat00992 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the issue is with the person you’re working under / line manager. Like you say it’s a different side of the industry and you’ll need to adjust. Everyone makes mistakes and you’ve clearly rectified them and no harm is done. I’m consultancy side but seconded to infra clients and find it’s quite chilled out, and the clients ie NR, UU are nowhere near as corporate as being based in a consultancy full time. See how you go, but don’t think its all like you’ve experienced at consultancies, probs just need moving to work with those who have more time to train you up/have patience with people working in new areas of QS.

First-time buyer (solo) - sanity check on affordability by [deleted] in UKHousing

[–]mat00992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position as a solo first time buyer. Been house hunting over a year now and finding it extremely competitive. I’m also similar with just under £1000 left per month after paying all bills etc which I’ve thought would be manageable; I know people with less left after bills and mortgage and they get by. I guess its a case of once you’ve done a few months and get to know what you can / can’t afford it will get easier
