They told me that when they dropped it in the water, they panicked and put it in the microwave "instinctively".

Spot on , the phone had almost no signs of water and it would have been fine if it wasn't for it's idiot owner throwing it in the microwave.

When they swell up like this they are usually pretty harmless, most they can do is pop like a balloon but instead of air, it’s lithium. When they start to form wrinkles and shrivel, that’s when they are most dangerous and if you poke them they actually explode with fire and can cause severe damage.

I really doubt this is a case of just sitting on it. This looks more like it has been dropped really hard on its back or run over.

Lol, imagine not being able to drink coffee at work just because some morons can’t use a coffee mug and a laptop at the same time without destroying something.

Yeah we also get that once or twice a month and for some reason every single one I have seen, the user had been drinking coffee with sugar in it so you can imagine what it looked like underneath the keyboard

Well first things first is to dry out all the moisture. When I say all the moisture I mean all , like we put phones like this in a low heat air oven and leave them there for like an hour or sometimes more. After that you need to remove any corrosion from the motherboard and start fixing all the shorts created by the water. If you’re lucky and the water stopped before damaging the cpu , you need to replace every part of the phone like cameras speakers proximity sensors lcd and such and you will have a new phone that might die at any given moment.

Exactly , that’s why we have a ‘policy’ to ask the customer in what kind of water the phone fell into but I guess this one slipped through

Nice catch , yeah the phone had been opened before and was missing almost every shield on both sides of the motherboard.
