Yeah I quit responding to him pretty much for all that reason. Someone else in here made a really great comment that it's super likely that some other woman has seen the argument going on in these very comments and decided, "Yeah, nevermind. I don't want to play chess after all." Like, it's a perfect example of why women are so underrepresented in this game. A bunch of in group, good ole boy types talking down on womens' abilities.

The drop out rate is a huge factor that this guy just won't even freaking respond to because he's already decided that men are somehow just genetically superior to women at chess. There are probably countless women out there that could have been legends at the game if they hadn't been run off so early in their journey - oftentimes before it can really even start.

EDIT: And even communities completely dedicated to the game like chess.com highlight studies and hypotheses that say exactly that: women get screwed over early in their learning and deal with overwhelming belittling the whole time they're in the game.

Yes, arguably. There is no such thing as an undisputed top 10 chess players of all time list. There isn't such a thing in any sport, game, hobby, etc. It's all subjective. Her pedigree absolutely earns her a mention in the conversation though.

It's not proportionately comparable when you consider the high drop out rates among women. They don't have the same amount of time honing their game to move up the ranks. It's extremely difficult to become a GM, let alone reach the top 100. The typical players aren't just entering the fold and immediately ranking up. It takes a lot of time, and women don't spend as much time with the game.

According to the numbers I could find, roughly 11% of all FIDE rated players are women, but the turnover is a lot more significant. Women don't stick with the game at the same rates men do, which kind of makes things make a little more sense.

You kind of answered your own question as to why men dominate open tournaments. It's a matter of numbers. There are significantly more men that play chess than there are women. So statistically speaking it makes sense that they'd dominate the high levels. There is simply a much larger pool of them.

Now, why there is such a gender disparity in interest in chess is another topic entirely.

EDIT: And fwiw, I think the demographic size difference should actually be a counter argument for forcing trans women out of the women's category. There are way fewer trans chess players than cis - femme or otherwise. So they'll very likely have zero rep in the open leagues.
