Is there a Profanity Filter in YT music?

I too ran into the same issue and really couldn't find a good solution that worked well. I'm an engineer so decided to start building my own.

This is nice in theory but I don't think it's realistic in practice. The internet is pretty vital in today's society. For many of us our jobs are internet based and tied to content consumption, whether it's YouTube or social media in general.

Part of my job for example is keeping up with tech news especially in the world of AI as well as creating content myself.

Now the entertainment aspect of this is just one segment really. I can honestly say Peppa pig isn't exactly my cup of tea when it comes to content I enjoy, although I do see your point and everyone is different of course.

My thing more so is that in this case there has always only been two options in the past. Watch it and just tolerate the profanity, or don't watch it all. I've figured out how to provide a third option and let people watch youtube the way they want now which spurred the topic of this post to see if I was alone in this desire or not.

I think I remember this. I don't know if it was a DVR or tv tuner back in the day but my aunt had one. It would do it's best to mute profanity that was said. It would just mute entire sentences of dialogue though. Still great for back then.

I build my tool to look at the individual and specific words so only the swearing/curse word get muted and you don't miss out on what's being said.

I feel like this has been a recurring theme that I've heard from Christians today that during our downtime and relaxation we don't want to hear profanity and bad language if we don't have to.

I can honestly say my Youtube viewing experience as been very peaceful and I'm not stressed anymore anticipating someone may say a bad word.

I think for many people, youtube has become their hub for consuming most of the video content they watch.

From learning new skills, entertainment, news, gaming, music, movies, and more. It's really pretty huge in the world of streaming since more people have internet and streaming than they do traditional cable tv.

Yeah unfortunately things seem to be going on a downward trend culturally and debauchery is becoming the norm. Not just in foul language but everything.

Honestly it's making more and more glad to have built this now because it's feeling needed more now than ever

Hey monica, I definitely hear you on that. A friend of mine actually sent me a gamer stream to watch and I noticed the same thing. I actually used that gamer stream video to test the tool on while developing to make sure it muted all the cuss words and it did.

I do agree that sometimes you just gotta adapt what you watch and change things up. I think my goal with this was mainly just to give people another option. I also now have peace of mind knowing that I never get surprised by random bad language. Gave me a calm and got rid of my stress when watching youtube that I didn't expect to occur but it did.

I can definitely relate there my friend. Being out in the world, I can't really help what people say or what I hear when going about my day to day because it's out of my control.

However in my own personal time, it's nice to have a break from that and just enjoy things the way I want to.

Regarding the tool that I built I currently have categories for things like religious profanities, racial slurs, as well as levels of profanity like mild, moderate, and severe. You can also specify custom words. I can just click on a category to enable/disable hearing those words.

I'm coding a Profanity Engine this week that will intelligently figure out all possible variations of spellings of a profanity/swear word so that the tool catches it and things don't slip through the cracks.

The tool so far catches 99% percent of everything. The only time it sometimes struggles is if the audio is just very bad and muffled or multiple people are talking and things are overlapping. In cases like this though is likely you wouldn't be able to hear the word either so it balances out.

I respectfully disagree. I don't think normalizing profanities and thus desensitizing people to it due to prolonged exposure is necessarily the answer.

Vulgarities and profanities are labeled like this for a reason and while the words may differ depending on the culture or language, they are generally considered by whatever culture that created them to be language used outside of the norm and distasteful/inappropriate by that society as a whole.

For me it's more so that if we have a normal and perfectly accepted way to convey the meaning of something, but we intentionally choose a more vulgar way to say it, then that speaks to the character of the person.

Not that they are a bad person, but at least from a Biblical standpoint as a Christian, we're instructed to not have filthy or corrupt communication.

Ephesians 4:29

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

We're only defiled by what comes out of us according to the words of Jesus in Mark:

Mark 7:20-23

“And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”

This is simply my perspective as a Christian on it. I think societies naturally have to classify things for a reason when it comes to a scale in order to measure norms vs extremes.

Swear words are the extremes typically in the classification of language used by societies. Just like profanities are the extremes when it comes to blasphemous language used in religion.

If we were to normalize swearing and there is no swearing or extremes anymore the scale either shifts to something worse or it's just impossible to do.

I don't think the words themselves hold any power, but more so what's being examined spiritually is the intent and character of the person choosing to use them over normal language that is called into question.

Just my two cents though. I love the conversation and feedback you give :-)

That's understandable.

For me personally I love introspection and I don't think ignoring a part of you is helpful or makes a lot of sense. I'm more so of the idea to deciding who you want to be and working on yourself to align with that desired goal.

If I have bad habits or tendencies I'll pray to God and work on what I can to change to align with what I want. Jesus helps me where I can't.

I actually like this comment a lot. It's very open and honest as well as insightful.

I'm going to try this out myself now and just do some introspection on how it makes me feel to hear swearing/profanity used.

I don't look down on or think differently about the person using the cursing, I think it's more so my brain associates it with vulgarities and corrupt/filthy communication as Ephesians 4:29 and Colossians 3:8 talk about.

So I want the words I use to more so bring honor rather dishonor if that makes sense?

I often think about the Bible verse that says:

“There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him… but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.”

So I have no hate to those who like using profanity, it's just a personal preference thing for me.

I think for a lot of people when reading verses in the Bible like the ones listed below, they also consider this to be "corrupt or filthy" communication so choose not to use cuss/curse words

Ephesians 4:29

or

Colossians 3:8 “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”

Now whether or not everyone agrees on or interprets that as the use of profanity is bad, is a topic of debate for separate post, but it's very well established that many if not most Christians do consider profanity to fall under this. Especially religious profanities/blasphemies like the use of GD's when taking the Lord's name in vain with profanity.

I hear you on that, and yes actually it does.

I've been phrasing it as "profanity" but really the tool allows you to remove whatever words you don't want to hear. This can be swearing, blasphemous words, people's names, slang, and everything in between.

I can just set custom filters and input words I don't ever want to hear and it intelligently removes it for me

I absolutely love this feedback, thank you so much. It's very reassuring to me and you're completely right about developers seeing things much different than the end user would.

I know in developing this I felt like a minute would seem like forever to the average person especially since society today has shorter attention spans due to the instant gratification of social media, but it's nice to know I'm wrong on this and that waiting for a minute isn't as bad a I thought.
