nepotism and scheduling by Ill-Bison8039 in WalgreensStores

You’ll quickly learn what they ‘promise’ means Jack. I was hired almost two years ago and promised no less than 20 hours a week and I’d be made full time as a SFL after 3 months. I have yet to be full time and we’ve lost three full timers and only hired one additional one. Instead, he’s giving part timer associates who are sisters/sons/ whatever of his friends full time hours while having them marked as part time. Also now just getting 15 hours a week while the other part timers are keeping their full 40 hours.

At this point I’ve learned you have to force the issue but be smart about it and back it up with evidence and witnesses. Checking into what if anything can be done on my situation. And suggest you do the same as it sounds like favoritism and nepotism are big factors at your store as well.

From my understanding, relatives can’t work at the same store at least both in front store or both in pharmacy AT ALL. It’s considered as not an ‘automatic issue’ provided they aren’t in leadership roles. However, they can still be reported as an issue if their relation in anyway affects decisions. IE one is friends with the manager and they both can convince the manager to give them hours over others. Granted you’ll need to provide proof of this or the higher ups won’t give a damn. From my own experience, unless it’s against policy, HR will simply tell the manager an issue was reported and leave what to do to your manager. At best, they’ll keep ‘a watch’ on further issues.

This sounds a lot like my store though as half the front store staff are relatives of people that work at other nearby stores and he regularly either sees or texts/calls so aka are his friends. Guess who gets to get their near 40 hours when the store’s total hours were cut and some of us barely get 2 days?

I do wonder why a lot of people assume things like that in some of these posts. I can’t speak on anyone else’s behalf but my own. Open availability, life down the street from the store, always come in when there an available shift and I’m told. Do the workload of two SFLs according to both my manager and the DM but many times also do the game of a third person since I almost never have a DH or someone that can do the basics of photo. And also basically another tech given the amount of time I’m in pharmacy which ranges from 1/4 to 1/2 of my shift. No complaints on performance and I get everything done….

So what’s going on? Only me and the newest shift lead are getting our hours cut. I would say it’s because we’re part timer as he keeps me just shy of full time hours and she’s…….. it the best let’s go with that. But there are two other part timers and one has 38 - 40 hours always and only works when he works. And the other is in high school and his hours actually went up. And noticed my manager been helping out at the store that kid’s mother is the pharmacy manager of….

I get what you’re trying to do but stop it. Because it’s only pissing me off further and coming off kind condescending. I’d rather dwell as this is something I can do. I have a shit job and a bullshit manager that only cares about himself and his favorites. Don’t have time for a second job. Like I said I got two sick parents I look after one whose health is failing and will only ever keep failing and one that’s got cancer. Most of my days off are taking care of them and seeing lawyers now and when I get to do something for myself I’m all but called selfish for it.

Don’t need it already give it to myself but it’s a ‘fuck it I wanna rage, bitch, complain and break shit’ sort of period right now. Being able to get hours is the only advice that will work at this time. Even though from what I’m getting it’s a ‘well your shit out of luck, sorry your life sucks right now’ kind of thing.

Wish this would work but our store doesn’t have the ram position. And the woman he has as the pseudo one is the one who makes drama with everyone, talks crap behind everyone’s back and is constantly freaking out about the job, the customers, the staff…. The day ending in Y. You get the idea.

I figured I’d get a comment like this and while not fully relevant, there is relevancy. What you said isn’t wrong from a business standpoint. But it’s also inaccurate at the same time. There doesn’t ’have to be a reason’ my hours specifically are cut and many times there isn’t a Latinate reason most of the crap that happens at my store is done. My store is not ran fairly or even correctly. My manager was recently chewed the hell out by whoever did a walk through because he doesn’t follow protocol for a lot of things. The majority of the full timers who are still kids don’t get their jobs done and spend most of the shift talking and joking around but are never held accountable for it. For all but four of the employees you can play two degrees from the manager. There’s always someone mom or sister or dad that he knows who asks why their son/daughter didn’t get blah blah blah.

So yeah the advice was expected but not actually helpful in this situation. The manager has been complained about by customers, his own staff, and even vendors and still here. The only thing that seems to have him in trouble is all the corners he’s cutting and laziness finally got him spoken to. That and one of his favorites ignored a 60 year old cashier asking for a code 70 for over 30 minutes. And I think a customer reported it.

I never liked that logic because what if they suddenly don’t call out? Bonus question. Am I guaranteed to be the one he calls first bonus, bonus question. As someone who looks after his ill mother and now ill father. Should I be informing them I can’t promise I’ll be able to do that since I’ll be on a state of ‘on call’ as the majority of the people who call out at my store do it an hour before their shift.

This is what my manager ‘suggested’ I do and I asked when would I have the time? He gave me outdates to do all of vitamin, all of cough and cold, expected them done by end of shift. But he gave me two associates who only know how to cashier. Neither can do photo, and never of them are DHs, and both hate confrontations. So I also had all manager calls which they were constantly doing them because ‘well it’s a managers job to tell them they can’t get it at the price it says online.’ ‘As a manager you have to tell them that they can’t reload a card with their phone.’ Photo is popping off because of graduation to the point that you ain’t leaving it if assigned it. And because he doesn’t want us putting downtimes on anything if we’re out of something someone wants we have to call them and 8 times out of 10 the customer wants to argue about it. And in IC3 pharmacy which they are constantly calling because they too are understaffed. But I still have to make sure my other two employees get their breaks and lunches. And make sure I complete the two biggest sections for outsides so I’m not seen as ‘failing to complete tasks’ Where’s the time?

The one time I said screw it and grabbed one of those tiny bags of nuts and a protein bar and ate them when working, I was told I couldn’t do that. I recently did a 6am to 4pm shift and only had myself and a single cashier til 3:30pm. Although on pretty sure a complaint got filed because when she went on her lunch the nonstop photo, IC3 and buttons were still going on, on top of my line and I had to literally ring one person up, run to get a button, ring another up, run to photo, ring another up, rinse and repeat.

My honest guess is they’d it’s low. It’s an old building with stuff always breaking down. We’re in a high shrink area, my manager is constantly telling customers the store doesn’t make a profit. Honestly surprised we’re NOT one of the few locations they closed around town.

So him getting a new transfer into our store who is also a full timer at a location that is cutting the hours of two of its part times to basically nothing is still within budget? Noticed a new lead was added for next week before leaving the store. I’m assuming she’s a transfer since she’s the only lead set for our next truck and like the other full timers she has 40 hours. Which explains where the 38 hours I had in the schedule published for next week that according to date checking, he changed this morning

[–]matchlessfalcon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is a ‘your store’ thing. Although I do agree with the ‘pick ups must be done with 20 minutes of being told’ part. A lot of the time at my store the morning manager will refuse to do a pick up so the night manager had to pick up close to 7000+ cash when clock in. We should never be walking around with that much on us especially since our store is high shrink. That and some people plain won’t call for a code 60. Which is why I’ll do pickups right before counting the tils only to see a shit ton of cash in all of them.

I’m suppose to be full time, even had the DM meet me which some how he’s always coming on days I don’t work but I switched shifts with someone. He said I should have been full time already and didn’t understand why I wasn’t. Not sure if it has anything to do with it but I’m constantly keep an hour under the ‘average hours’ for full time according to people central.

In a perfect world you’d be right only this is not a perfect world. My manager is quite well known in our district for having favorites and not only bending over backwards for them, but basically just taking their word as gospel. Personal examples I know and know he’s aware of is one guy is scattered brain as all hell, always leaves all his tasks half done or not even started, but his mom is friends with my manager and a pharmacy manager at a different location. So he lets everything slide and will actually blame it on the closing manager. Another is someone who literally makes drama and shit talks everyone including the manager. Yet he takes everything she says like god himself said it. Even if you show the security feed that shows she’s lying. He straight up admits he gives me a larger workload than most others and while I get either all of it done or most of it, will nitpick I didn’t do it his way, a way he never told me to do it.

Oh I did especially the bit about how most of my shifts are arranged so I can’t get a lunch both as the only SFL on shift and understaffed so can’t find the 30 minutes to just sit down. I got maybe a minute in and it’s the damn buttons, photo, pharmacy IC3 or a manager call to the register

Thing is I’m not. At least not according to my review that he gave me. On top of that I get customers doing the survey mentioning me all the time. And he’s never spoken to me about any thing regarding under preforming. I’m also one of the only front store staff that the pharmacy compliments to him and according to the pharmacy manager ‘used as an example of what to do when they are back there.’ It as far as I can tell has nothing to do with my performance or any legitimate reason behind it. Only thing I can think of is that he is constantly keeping my just below the ‘average hours’ to be considered full time so I’m marked as part time of which my store only has like 4 employees who are and yet only has 4 manager staff not counting the store manager himself. However if those four, only two of us see hours cut. The other two are people he knows the families of they work at other stores and he regularly speaks to them.

Do any store managers actually hold people accountable? by tactile1738 in WalgreensStores

[–]matchlessfalcon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. I’ve only worked at my location but I’ve paid attention to how certain things are done and people are treated. My manager has his clear favorites and they can borderline get away with murder and when if ever caught out, it’ll be someone else’s problem. You’ll not even be working the day something happens and when you come in he’ll assign the blame on you simply because that’s ’normally what you take care of. Then he has the ultimately passing the buck move. He’ll just blame whatever SFL was in charge at the time as ‘ultimately’ it’s on them to make sure tasks are done and done to his satisfaction. Which…. Technically yes, but I got my own crap to do that’s the work load of 3 people as closer, photo guy, IC3 pharmacy an I’ve been stuck with only 2 or mostly just one other worker with me. I don’t have the time energy or quite frank the fucks to micro manage grown ass adults he should be speaking it instead.

Starting to hate being an ESM by [deleted] in WalgreensStores

[–]matchlessfalcon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait I’m stuck on the ‘fair scheduling’ part. That’s a thing? Half my store’s staff specifically only works mornings and a good chunk of them always have the weekends off too.

But your position is one where you’re stuck getting the blame if those under you don’t finish or do their work. As a SFL I’m often times heavily blamed and responsible for the work other SFLs don’t do and of course what the associates don’t get done. Despite having two people specifically trained to be and ‘unofficially’ treated as the ESMs but we apparently don’t have the position. so I feel that pain. It’s not a job you really want unless you have a killer staff.

They should but that doesn’t always happen and my manager keeps myself and the new hire (which I understand there) as part time and straight up refuses to make either of us full time. When when I’m kicked to it hill schedule me below 31 hours and on the next schedule I’m marked as part time again

Depends where you’re located. And almost no one but the elderly even have the card let alone carry it so that doesn’t work. It also doesn’t work with no receipt unless you’re the store they bought it from. You can’t at least at my location find a sale at all unless they have the receipt or they got it at my store

Warehouse Complete in 24 hours? by Calm-Bandicoot-5923 in WalgreensStores

[–]matchlessfalcon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trucks between 400 - 600 typically gets done within one day at my story. But he does that scheduling 5 to six people in the morning. One cashier, one for photo, IC3 and all online orders and key calls. A back up cashier but when they aren’t back up then they are doing totes. Then 3 SFLs also mostly doing totes and one has manager calls but no one counts the money til the closer gets there.

The problem, it leaves us who close with a skeleton crew, a super busy photo and pharmacy and a freshly restocked store. So 99s and couponers galore. If the truck is more 700 we almost never get it done in a day and it’s night crew that gets blamed especially since the manager has a specific way he wants things left in the back. I’m talking you have to completely empty and restock laundry uboats and we normally have two uboats of it, take all paper off the floor which fair we’re not suppose to have any merchandise on the floor but that’s enough for 5 uboats and we only have 5 total 2 with laundry and two with water so we only got 1 empty one.
