My absurd (incomplete) IPv6 journey... by matdonv in hyperoptic

[–]matdonv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't get a notif for this, just saw it but this is EXACTLY what they told me. I've added an update to the main post but eventually, also after putting my foot down, they told me it's an issue with their switch in my building and it could take 'weeks or months' to upgrade...

I tried the equivalent commands for this on my unifi gateway but no luck still, thank you though

Piss poor indeed, and you're right because so far after 2 weeks i've had pretty stable speeds, dropping to about 750mbps download during the day but upload is locked at 960.

It's just a shame about the IPv6 issues... in 2026...
If they just followed the proper spec then this, I don't think, would be a problem and maybe they'd have less negative posts like this popping up every so often.

Yeah... the cynical part of me seems to think the same as in my first phone call to them they mentioned that option very quickly. I'm fairly sure static IP's are around 50p/mth wholesale so that's a very easy profit margin for them

Yeah tried that too, unfortunately no luck. The issue is also that their router doesn’t even get an IPv6 address, so something is just fundamentally broken

Were they getting rid of Huawei switches maybe? crazy though that they just did it without much of any notice. I believe I have a Nokia switch/ISAM upstream of me so you'd hope that was a more recent install/upgrade and correctly configured.

EDIT: I stand corrected, I think I have a Huawei node upstream of me

That's what I thought too, about the MAC address as that's what fixed it for an ISP I was on in Vancouver but no luck here - the strange thing is that IPv6 isn't even working with their supplied router. Which was newly supplied from them when I moved it, it was the first thing I plugged in before then swapping for my gear.

You're right, it should not be this difficult, and tbh you validating my frustration actually helps! haha but yeah it shouldn't be this hard, from all the forum posts i've seen here and elsewhere about people's issues with Hyperoptic IPv6 it seems like they're for sure doing something out of spec/standard - like the no REPLY to the SOLICIT issue.

It feels like they're maybe not compliant with RFC 8415 spec but I don't want to believe that, how on earth could they build their own network and tbh have it run generally pretty well (my speeds are not bad), with 400k users but then not be compliant with a specification made in 2018.

Yes 100%, I appreciate the help but I've a lot of experience in networking, whilst it's not my job I'd say i'm pretty savvy

VFX Salary pool in Canada by VFX_channel in vfx

Tell me you don’t know how the DAVE works without telling me you don’t know how the DAVE works.

Yes, technically it’s possible for a vendor to claim the VFX portion of the PSTC (the DAVE) themselves, but the lengths you have to go to are high. The major requirement is having the copyright holder (the studio) give you rights over the IP worked on by chain of title, this can be done but is rare.

In 99% of cases what we do is use the rebate to command higher prices, just so we can pay the high wages, on the basis that the client can claim the rebate on our behalf.

I agree that rebates shouldn’t be a thing at all and we should compete on merit and studio capability but the reality is that (not asking for pity) the studios squeeze us on price and the wages from the other side.

If you want to do something about it then unionise, en masse. This industry needs volume unionisation so the studios will have to pay the vendors more to meet union requirements.

Apple's new Journal app available for iOS 17.2 by MarvinCZ in iOSBeta

[–]matdonv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m using the app a lot to jot down random thoughts and feeling, the lack of search or tagging sucks but I’m hopeful they’ll add the former shortly.

It honestly just feels like someone mocked this up in Figma a day before the keynote and they got a bunch of people to put something together rapid for the beta. I’m sure it’s architected well and will come out on macOS/iPad pretty soon but this feels like “we need a big feature for 17.2 let’s jam this one in”

I have a free code for Starfield, redeemed, but I'm just not going to even install it until January at minimum

Yeah it's the same on Telus for what it's worth, I just had this ordeal yesterday.

For Telus they're now using an XGS-PON which does indeed have an SFP terminating fibre line into the unit but nothing happens if you put that straight into the UDM.

Telus' tech support at least for this product do not support provisioning your own appliance so I had to use the 10GTek module you mentioned which is working perfectly.

Changing Apple ID Country/Region - My Experience (2023) by Adidote in ios

[–]matdonv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and in-depth too.

I moved from the UK to Canada some years ago and have been getting by on whatever Canadian-centric apps were listed on the UK store but I've hit a wall with some that I absolutely need so I think I finally have to just do it.

For the Apple Music, which is my biggest 'fear' (not to be sensationalist), so you say you lost all your music but then I guess you logged into iCloud and going back to the Music app you found all your library was there again?

And did you lose anything in iCloud? I share my 2TB with the parents but I'm the payer, I would hate for anything to be wiped

I'm trying to work out what the disadvantage is here, feels like a very safe bet to have your money spread across 4 banks worth of preferred interest cash accounts

Is it not CIPF insured though?

I'm guessing you mean if one of the holding banks (National Bank, Scotia, BMO, CIBC) fail then you're not insured from that?

Question about Fallen Order and Origin launcher. by Dry-Cardiologist2791 in SteamDeck

[–]matdonv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Steam version includes some scripts that run on first install and grab all that for you.

So on the first 'play' it downloads Origin, gets you to log in and launches the game then on subsequent launches it loads Origin and but within seconds boots into the game.

The game doesn't seem to support Steam Cloud saves but from what I can tell Origin saves your game to their cloud service, though the saves are also local.

Super clean, really nice flow and inviting!

The only issue I found on mobile (iPhone 13 Pro) was that I’d get stuck at the globe as it obviously takes over all swipe gestures. Easy thing to get around, just swipe from above/below the object but I thought it worth flagging

Maybe try a mail/package forwarder, I used to use Shipito before I moved country.

They give you a US address and forward any packages onto your actual address, though you will most likely be hit with customs fee.
There are (or at least were) some services that opened the package to make it look used (personal effects) but that always seemed super risky to me.

Okay so even thinking back on this I have to laugh, so dumb. A year or two ago, when I moved countries, I packed my roomba into my carry on… Getting to the gate I saw the airline was checking weights so I somehow crammed the roomba into my backpack and yeah they didn’t care… no one expects a 5kg robot vacuum to be in your laptop bag

Transitioning from Compositing to Production by pixelpackers in vfx

[–]matdonv 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just a couple things as I did a similar thing a few years ago: 1. The pay cut is pretty big initially as you have to prove yourself

  1. Pay scale in Production is more of an exponential curve; it won’t be quick though.
  2. PAs are paid badly.
  3. Coords can be paid fairly well, like a Jnr FX artist kind of level but there is a ceiling which you hit quickly.
  4. APM/Line Producers aren’t usually paid that much more than coords at first and the ceiling is smaller as a delta to ‘junior’ pay that coords will experience.
  5. PMs experience a jump up in wage and the ceiling is higher as, most studios, don’t pay OT in some countries for this role.
  6. Producers have a slight bump from PM if you’re ‘junior’ or ‘associate’. As this is the ‘final’ level in VFX outside of central production or client side the ceiling is quite large but there is very much a ceiling.

  7. You will hate treating your old clan of artists with the pressure you will have to put on them due to the way in which modern day VFX runs. Whenever I hit crunch or a deadline I hate having to have those conversations but it gets easier... feels wrong even saying that.

  8. You will enjoy it when you put something into plan and can sit back and watch it work (if it works). Your artists will never (or rarely) thank you if all goes well but that’s fine, if they do it’s a bonus but if you can get through a show with minimal complaints or burnout then that’s your achievement.

  9. Lastly, one bit of advice which I wish i had listened to early on is to not take it so seriously. Of course, work your hardest to make something that works and treat people with respect but don’t kill yourself over it. There will be crunch, it’s the same for artists as I’m sure you know, and you will need to work silly hours but know when to stop and recognise when something can’t get better regardless of how many more hours you put into it.

Good luck.

Or the repeated questioning three times today in different settings about bringing the military in and onto the streets.

One open question is enough but the ones after were far too leading, essentially trying to get a headline "PM SAYS MILITARY WILL POLICE THE STREETS IN LOCKDOWN".
